This one?

Obtained by the SuperKamiokande neutrino detector deep in a mountain in Japan. Not a snapshot. More an image built up from accumulated solar neutrinos over a period of about a year.

Neutrinos rarely intract with matter. The SuperKamiokande deterctor, deep inside a mountain in Japan, detects very few solar neutrnos. The image is constructed from those accumulated in about a year. That’s why it’s so grainy. Nevertheles, a quite incredible image!
Looks like 8 bit. 😄

Superkamiokande in Japan.
Amazing! Which array? I was lucky enough to help install a few of the strings in the European cubic kilometer telescope. So cool!

The Superkamiokande detector can certainly determine the direction of incoming neutrinos.
I'm afraid I'm ignorant of how this works. My understanding was that no directional information came from the detectors. What am I missing?

The neutrino, i.e. "little neutral one," is in the Nobel news today.

Here I am a few years ago talking about neutrinos and poems about neutrinos from my book named after a neutrino observatory. Hashtag neutrino. Hashtag FWIW.

That's right. Very occasionally a neutrino interacts with a proton in a water molecule in the SuperKamiokande detector. The subatomic debris flies through the water, generating "Cherenkov" light, picked up by light-detectors (Same light that makes radioactive waste in ponds at Sellafield glow blue)
Cherenkov radiation, apparently. In very, very small amounts. That picture looks like the one that Super-Kamikande generated; see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super-K... and strangepaths.com/the-sun-seen...

I heard this factoid well before SuperKamiokande was built, in the Seventies when the Solar Neutrino Problem was being contemplated.

There was even a goofy conjecture that when you catch your neutrino, that's when you die. But the distribution of death ages isn't the same as that of ν hit rates.

Not a dumb question at all. Neutrinos interacts extremely rarely with the atoms of matter. The detection strategy is therefore to boost this by putting A LARGE NUMBER of atoms in their way - in this case, 50,000 tonnes of water at SuperKamiokande in Japan www-sk.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/sk/

BlueSky seismologists: I could do with some advice, please. I'm trying to get hold of data from a Japanese station labeled "KOKH", located in Kamioka 神岡, for ~2001-11-12 20:33:40. There's a JMA station there now (N.KOKH, 36.37783, 137.37167), but only from 2002-10-06. Any suggestions?

This is a water Cherenkov detector (SuperKamiokande). It works because neutrinos interact and create particles that travel faster than the speed of light in water, which makes rings

We can’t yet see neutrinos in real-time. The image of the Sun created by the Superkamiokande detector was compiled from solar neutrinos picked up over several years.

Very conveniently, these ALPs would induce a distinctive signal at neutrino water Cherenkov detectors, at high energy (above ~20 MeV) where the background is very small. Data from Super-Kamiokande can rule out a wide range of ALP-proton couplings for ALP masses below 80 MeV.

We had a superb #physics lecture this week by Professor Takaaki Kajita on his work on #neutrino oscillations that led to his 2015 #NobelPrize in Physics. Fascinating to hear his first-hand account of the physics of the discovery woven together with the history of the #SuperKamiokande detector.

Hidden 1,000 meters under Mount Ikeno in Japan, the Super-Kamiokande is one of the world’s most advanced neutrino detectors. It’s basically a giant tank holding 50,000 tonnes of ultra-pure water surrounded by 11,000 light sensors.
