Hills & Valleys is the musically superb and atmospheric album, from the seven-piece acoustic jazz ensemble Superlocrian.

I think it's because standard lydian and superlocrian is inherently incompatible.

Maybe in the Locrian mode, in Superlocrian its even weirder than that.
May 3, 2025 at 9:56 PM
apparently it's called superlocrian or altered dominant in some cases (not to be confused with supermajor etc from certain non-12tet tuning systems)

I NEED TO LEARN THIS SYSTEM I AM MAKING SO MANY SPICY JAZZY PROGRESSIONS THAT JUST PERFECTLY CARRY TENSION

HOW HAS THIS SOMEHOW EVADED ME WHEN I KNOW NICHE SHIT LIKE SUPERLOCRIAN MODE AND RIDGE TONES AND THE COLTRANE MATRIX?!

I'm going down a wild rabbit hole y'all.

You know it could be the superlocrian counter-point I guess.

Sometimes I try to dabble in jazzy and funky dissonance-heavy scales. That's where I came across superlocrian, actually.

That whole fusion sound. It's relaxing. And stressfull.

Superlocrian or Altered Scale is just every b interval from the root note.
1 b2 b3 b4 b5 b6 b7 8

All the weird notes in one scale. Nice.

Just the standard modes, or batshit crazy stuff like superlocrian?

Also ever sense I started playing Semi-Maqams, pure western scales sound equally bizarre to me.

( I play a lot of Superlocrian Dominant )
February 13, 2026 at 7:45 AM
Phrygian interval in Superlocrian in this Lydian dominant makes a soup commercial want to sound like metal.
September 23, 2025 at 7:02 PM
See Im never sure how to describe my music as I keep using traditional Japanese rhythm in an Marching Band Jazz melodic context, but in modal interchange using Locrian, Superlocrian, and Ultra Locriam. Some Lydian Dominant.
September 13, 2025 at 4:35 PM
I genuinely cannot imagine a normal use case for Superlocrian in metal if you were to play in a metal context: there is just not a lot of situations that are dark enough to warrant that. Most Nu Metal I heard of that uses Locrian uses true Locrian clashing with Phrygian.
July 15, 2025 at 5:19 AM
Part of that is Im still unlearning the habits I developed playing Superlocrian and Ultralocrian Jazz Fusion.
June 17, 2025 at 7:48 PM
No wonder I recognized that chord progression, it came from superlocrian.
May 8, 2025 at 4:44 AM
A Diminished Scale version with Superlocrian aspects is definitely quite the choice for Greensleeves.

It's like Greensleeves but more spooky.
