They're repeating their threat conditioned response, it's autonomous (and that's why it's so dangerous) - notice it by it's speed, it's an instant answer, no consideration, immediate deflection - and it's not just politics either (and once you start seeing it...) To an outside observer, it sounds ludicrous because it's a completely unfalsifiable hypothetical, a hand-wavey "alternative reality" narrative used to dodge actual accountability or genuine thought/engagement, that evapates like a vampire in midday sunshine on contact with reality. Logical minds look at systemic outcomes with nuance: multi-factor variables, policy impact, hard empirical data etc. But media diets designed around outrage bypass the prefrontal cortex entirely. When any messaging constantly signals existential dread ("the other side will do XYZ thing you don't want"), it forces the amygdala into a perpetual fight-or-flight loop. People don't evaluate policy logically because they never reach that cognitive stage, the manufactured fear takes over first and keeps them locked in the cycle in perpetuity. It isn't even unique to one specific party, country or issue; our brains are just wired this way, and political apparatuses (as well as modern advertising amongst other things) exploit that biology ruthlessly.
