Lately I have listen almost exclusively to Radio Paradise; but today they played “Frank’s Wild Years” by Tom Waits.
At that point I had to switch back to Apple Music and listen to the whole Swordfishtrombones album. 🥰
And now I moved on to “Let X=X (live)” by Laurie Anderson.
From time to time […]

Victor Feldman! which is what I guessed once you said that. besides his jazz work (e.g., Shelly Manne's great Black Hawk sessions), he played vibes on Let's Get It On, and was Tom Waits's original clanky percussion guy on Swordfishtrombones. A legend!

You should give Swordfishtrombones a listen—it's tighter, and bit more focused. You'd prefer it I think.

One of my favorite volumes in the 33 1/3 series is David Smay's incisive look at Tom Waits' incomparable SWORDFISHTROMBONES. Check it out...

Two entwined narratives run through the creation of Swordfishtrombones and form the backbone of this book. As the 1970s ended, Waits felt increasingly constrain…

Got a vinyl copy of Swordfishtrombones earlier this year. The one that marked the beginning of Waits' "experimental" era. Always thought it was a good album... but not a great one like Rain Dogs or Bone Machine. The more I listen to it, the more I believe it's as solid as Dogs or Bone. Masterpiece.

"Some say this yarn is the only thing that holds this man together. Some say he was never here at all."

-- Tom Waits, "Swordfishtrombones"
I talked to someone who had studied the philosophy of psychology. She said there was a big debate in those circles as to whether or not a “person” is defined as a collection of stories.

And I thought it was crazy and wrong but after 10 seconds, I was like, yes of course.

We are anthologies.

Revisit Tom Waits on British television in 1983, the year he released ‘Swordfishtrombones’ and began transforming his sound. This rare ‘Loose Talk’ footage captures three songs and his unmistakable storytelling. zurl.co/pLtlg
Video: Tom Waits Brings Three Songs And A Whole Cast Of Characters To British TV In 1983 - That Eric Alper
Tom Waits appeared on British television in October 1983 sounding like a man who had swallowed a gravel driveway and spent the afternoon arguing with a piano. His songs were populated by drifters, dreamers and people who probably owed somebody money. And with three performances on Channel 4’s ‘Loose Talk,’ he offered viewers a wonderfully […]
