IS HE MEETING WITH THE SYNODAL WAY BISHOPS IN GERMANY??????

GUYS

GUYS

THAT’S THE WHOLE BALLGAME
A friend of MINE in Europe said Leo "announced he is going to continue the reformation path of Francis" and is very interested in something something about conferring with the (apparently v liberal??) German bishops, so I feel like he might actually be Francis's guy. 1/

there is! the fringe sect YOU want is the Synodal Way, mostly centered in Germany and Austria. they’ve gotten slapped on the wrist for performing same sex marriage ceremonies, they support women’s ordination and are pushing aggressive reforms in how sex abuse cases are handled. they’re great
We can collectively be the change we want to see in the world

Are there any prolgbtq pro birth control access sects of the church? I'm legit considering rejoining as a lapsed Catholic at this point.

Uhhh
The German Synodial Way wants:
-ordination of women
-church blessings of homosexual unions
-homosexual acts within queer unions should be theologically accepted
-married priests should be accepted

That should be really interesting indeed...

From Leo's first speech:
"we want to be a synodal Church,"

So, yup. 😎

THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED

guys this is the biggest and most important data point this is EVERYTHING

the pillars of the Synodal Way are forceful and aggressive clerical abuse reforms, women’s ordination, same-sex marriage, LGBTQ rights, etc. the old guard Vatican treated them like HERETICS
I honestly have no idea how many languages this is being filtered through or via what channels but yeah: "he is particularly happy to talk to the Germans about the synodal way... "

I think the Synodal Way counts as an attempt at Recursive Self-Improvement.

Random thought of the morning...

If #CatholicBluesky becomes a thing, maybe we can try being synodal about it?

I was listening in Italian and heard “synodal”, but I’m not familiar enough with the Synodal Way context and assumed (out of lack of knowledge) that he was speaking more generally about Francis’ practice of synodal governance/redorms. Now I’m going to look for a transcript!

*nods knowingly*

Ah yes

The Synodal Way bishops of Germany.

Not to be confused, of course, with the slut gnomes of False Berlin

Get in loser, we’re going on a synodal journey

if you want to see something really hopeful, look up The Synodal Way, a movement emerging from Germany and Austria which is extremely pro women & LGBTQ rights and forceful abuse reforms. they're quite controversial with the old guard but phenomenally popular in their dioceses and a growing force

progressive Catholics have been worried for a LONG time about what happens next, and how much power the far right will have to roll back every advance Francis made, everywhere from reforming the Vatican Bank to bringing women and LGBTQ people into the synodal process for the first time in history

the whole reason the Vatican dogma police bureau released that random “quick reminder, we still hate gays” APB in 2021 out of seemingly nowhere was the department’s #2 guy firing a warning shot at the Synodal away after they publicly blessed a bunch of same-sex marriages (Francis fired him for it)

this is not an endorsement or agreement, by the way! I am very much Team German Cardinals here. the Synodal Way is doing great shit in Austria and Germany and that's where I see a lot of the hope for real church reform with some teeth in it

it's just a reminder that there is no Woke Left Pope

One last nugget: he framed the church as “synodal,” which signals that the new Leo is not interested in undoing Francis’s attempts to reconfigure how the church makes decisions. Meaning: less entirely top-down, Rome-centric.

a couple things I'll be watching for:

1. troubling history of how he handled two sex abuse cases is inescapable. we all found it immediately. he must know that. a lot hangs on how he engages with, for example, the German/Austrian movement called the Synodal Path, or others pushing FORCEFUL reform

Pope Leo today: “I would like to assure you of my intention to continue Pope Francis’ commitment to promoting the synodal nature of the Catholic Church and developing new and concrete forms for an ever stronger synodality in ecumenical relations.” press.vatican.va/content/sala...

I still emphatically believe we could see a Pope or at least some major department heads from the German Synodal Way movement in my lifetime. they're pro women's ordination, same-sex marriage, AGGRESSIVE sex abuse reforms, and a huge power shift between lay people and clergy. fantastic stuff

Yep. Transcript screenshot below: “we want to be a synodal church”. Your comments fits w/my general understanding (I was listening, but not translating into English) of that section as an affirmation of continuing/endorsing both the synodal governing process and initiatives of Pope Francis.

9. here is the thing

he is an old white cardinal

he is GOING to have bad takes and fuck up. he just is

the hopeful thing is that he seems to have a documented "puts money where mouth is" history of actually listening to normies and making changes based on that feedback ("synodal" process etc)
May 8, 2025 at 11:34 PM
It's been widely reported that he was a strong supporter of the Synodal process, in which he played a prominent role.
