@edyong209.bsky.social is one of the most crucial, most unselfish, and most open-hearted journalists/synthesists of our age and I am so glad #xoxofest is getting a view into the moral compass behind his work. ❤️❤️❤️

Confront EBM's "evidence synthesists" with these failures and they retreat to claiming no individual screwup counts, because you have to consider "the totality of evidence".

But because even the worst junk clinical research is almost impossible to get retracted, their "totality" is contaminated.

🧵
Health policy and guidance *must* be based on rigorous science. Not opinion laundering, not ""Evidence Based Medicine", not GRADE, not seniority.

There's a reason science builds everything around mechanistic understanding - nothing else is remotely as effective.

A reminder that while "Evidence Based Medicine" sounds like a good thing, so does "Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

For a preview of what the Trump NIH budget will likely be diverted to, read this 🧵.

EBM is a world where 2 + 2 can be 5 if the right people say so.

We might imagine that the evidence synthesists (who also often lack the subject-matter expertise necessary to identify errors, and reflexively embrace RCTs as "gold standard") could rely on prominent journals and peer review to do the work they don't have the training for.

Unfortunately, no:
🧵An example of the shenanigans and junk science accepted in medical journals.

In September 2023, JAMA Pediatrics published a ludicrously bad paper (quasi-retracted after much effort) claiming long COVID is "strikingly rare" in kids, supposedly vs the WHO definition.

RETRACTED: Post–COVID-19 Condition in Children
This cohort study assesses the parent-reported incidence and resolution of post–COVID-19 symptoms among children aged 8 to 13 years.

dumb product idea du jour, for modular synthesists: Tangle ™️ - its just a plastic hub with 16 identical patch cables coming out of it. but you cant tell what end is connected to what. you just patch it randomly and hope for the best. amount im joking: 3/5

Moving here from Twitter for reasons that are way to strange to put into words.

One of the weirder timelines.

I found these Starter Packs great to find a new home, full of psychologists, research synthesists, open science enthusiasts, R users, meta-researchers, network & measurement people!

The other day I posted a link to some of my writing aimed at beginning synthesists. Today, how about a link to some stuff for more advanced synthsters? Here's a post I wrote about one of my favorite sound design techniques: pinging filters!

There are five different types of thinkers with their own thinking styles: synthesists, idealists, pragmatists, analysts, and realists.

We're going to need everybody to figure out how to #StopTrump together!

Heinlein had this notion of “encyclopedic synthesists” and there’s something to that, the idea of an “expert generalist” but writ even larger, more broadly scoped. Squad goals.
the other day I looked at a line that was difficult to localize and went “oh I see what’s happening here. there’s a Shakespeare reference baked in that we don’t want to lose”. you don’t get that without filling your head with all of these creative pieces you squirrel away because of their meaning
YES! this is what techbros who have let their creative selves wither call "procrastination" or "inefficiency" and try to technologise away, not understanding that it is the source of creativity and imagination and everything good

Lovins:

Now is the time to be practitioners, not theorists; to be synthesists, not specialists; to do solutions, not problems; to do transformation, not incrementalism. It’s time to shift language and action from “somebody should” to “I will,” to do real work on real projects and to go to scale.

There’s always a hierarchy. West coast synthesists thought Moog adding a keyboard was the end of electronic music. Ussachevsky thought a Buchla sequencer was the end of electronic music. Purism and essentialism can be overly dogmatic, but there’s some truth in these ideas.
