It was always a challenge. I was one of the sysops on HOM-29 (peace to its ancient circuits!) and we had trouble keeping up too. 😏

CompuServe was great, but if you had a Commodore 64, QuantumLink was the bomb because it was in color (and had real user names).

Man what the fuck went wrong. People were legit proud of the system we had for that; it was a feeder for so many roles in netops, secops, sysops, sre, etc.
