What if you have a guard in your program that `assert` works, like pytest does? Then it's safe to use it throughout :)

also fyi it can be greatly simplified; the real culprit was that _pyrepl monkey-patched builtins.input and never cleaned it up

Cursed Ruby knowledge of the day: If you want to terminate your program, you call `Kernel.exit <N>`. This actually raises an exception `SystemExit` to cause the exit. So if you happen to have code triggering an exit wrapped in a `begin/rescue` that doesn't re-raise, your program will carry on. Nice.
