While walking in Szczecin’s Rose Garden, I came upon this stunning yellowy-peach rose that was almost perfectly round. I don’t know why but it was love at first sight! It looks like one of those glorious summer sunsets.

Check out this magnificent ‘natural monument’ (as it says on the green label) in Żeromski Park in Szczecin. It’s a giant Cappadocian maple. You can find it on Szczecin’s tree map here: www.drzewaszczecina.pl?cat=29. #ThickTrunkTuesday

Went for a stroll around Lake Głębokie, which is popular as a city bathing spot (the Polar Bear Club was out in force!) The lake is surrounded by mixed forest and includes several Natural Monuments, including this huge Oak (more info in ALT text). #ThickTrunkTuesday
A monumental oak from the “British Oaks” group in Szczecin’s Głębokie Forest Park, a large mixed woodland around Lake Głębokie. These protected natural-monument trees were named in honour of the British Repatriation Mission, which operated nearby between 1945 and 1947. After WWII, the newly-Polish city of Szczecin became a major transit point for huge population movements. The BPM worked with Polish authorities to move displaced people to and from the British occupation zone in Germany. Hundreds of thousands of mainly German but also Polish citizens passed through the city during this process. The “British Oaks” in Głębokie Forest Park were named to commemorate that mission, linking the park’s natural heritage with this complex post-war history.

Lunch down by the Odra/Oder river at the Jachtowa (Yacht) hotel and restaurant, where there’s a lovely terrace from which to admire the river & catch a few white-tailed eagles soaring over the bank opposite. In fact, if you’re particularly ‘eagle-eyed’ you’ll spot one in the distance 😺 Info in ALT
The historic Hotel and Restaurant Jachtowa on Lipowa Street in Szczecin’s Gocław district, a striking 1924–25 modernist brick building with a nautical wheel and “Jachtowa” sign above the entrance. The former Stettiner Yacht Club stands beside the Oder and Marina Gocław. The building originally hosted balls and social events for the city’s sailing community and later became famous for its large ballroom and dancing. It’s recently been renovated and now has a very pleasant sailing-themed restaurant with terrace. The garden of Restaurant Jachtowa beside the Oder in Szczecin’s Gocław district, with outdoor tables and chairs overlooking the broad river and its wooded opposite bank beneath a dramatic blue sky. A white-tailed eagle is also present in the scene, but is extremely difficult to spot against the distant clouds. White-tailed eagles are a characteristic sight around the Oder estuary and Szczecin Lagoon, where the extensive wetlands and fish-rich waters provide excellent habitat for Europe’s largest eagle. A bottle and glass of cloudy golden Jachtowe Pszeniczne, a wheat beer brewed specially for Restaurant Jachtowa by Szczecin’s Gryfus brewery, photographed beside the Oder in the restaurant garden. The label shows an illustrated view of Jachtowa and its riverside setting and carries the slogan “for those who choose their own course.” The beer makes a particularly appropriate drink here: Jachtowa was founded as the clubhouse of the Stettiner Yacht Club in 1924, and the restaurant remains beside Marina Gocław on the Oder.

A black Gryfus craft brewery stand at the St James Market (Jarmark Jakubowy) in Szczecin, selling locally brewed beer beneath tall branded flags. Behind it is the red-brick Gothic Cathedral Basilica of St James the Apostle, its huge tiled roof and distinctive green-copper spire dominating the scene. The cathedral, whose origins date to the 12th century, is one of Szczecin’s principal landmarks and gives its name to the annual summer market held around it. Fun fact: the spire is ‘new’, having been destroyed in WWII and only replaced in 2008. Now you can take a lift to the top for a great panoramic view of the city.

Pogoń’s Sunday home match coincided with the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Solidarity trade union. A commemorative event attended by the President was held in Szczecin at the gate of the Szczecin shipyard. The banner reads, ‘From the Shipyard to Freedom: 45 years of Solidarity’.

Pogoń Szczecin’s last game of the season summed up the entire campaign - winning 1-0 until the 88th min, goalie handballs outside the area, gets sent off, all the subs used, former player then duly scores in 90+5. The only consolation was that the draw meant that Legia didn’t qualify for Europe 😹

It’s a snowy day in #Szczecin, and our popular sailor monument is looking very determined, battling the elements!
The statue of a sailor which is one of Szczecin’s most popular monuments. He stands proudly at his ship’s wheel, surveying everything in front of him and looks in total control. Today, though, he’s covered in snow, which has settled in such a way that he looks particularly determined. Tourist Information on the Sailor Monument. It says, “Fountain Avenue - Sailor's Monument. In the mid 1970s, a footpath between plac Grunwaldzki and plac Lotników was converted into the 250-m long Fountain Avenue. On the side of plac Grunwaldzki, there is the Sailor's Monument, made of copper sheets by Ryszard Chachulski in 1980. Some of the buildings in the area date back to the turn of the 19th century (sic - should be 20th) and those destroyed during WWII were later rebuilt as the Inner City Housing District.”
