Discover why Abydos plays a central role in the study of Egypt's first dynasties, royal burials, early kingship, and the cult of Osiris.

Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes Al Sylvester, independent researcher and lifelong student of ancient mysteries, esoteric philosophy and the history of alchemy. In this fascinating edition of The 'X' Zone Radio Show, Sylvester explores Western Alchemy: The Protoscience, examining one of humanity's oldest and most mysterious traditions and its influence on the development of modern science, spiritual philosophy and the pursuit of immortality.Alchemy is an ancient philosophical and experimental tradition whose practitioners sought to uncover the hidden properties of matter and the fundamental secrets of nature. Among its most famous objectives was the creation of the legendary Philosopher's Stone, a mysterious substance believed capable of transforming ordinary metals into gold or silver. Equally fascinating was the search for the Elixir of Life, a substance supposedly possessing the power to restore youth, cure disease and perhaps even grant immortality.Sylvester explores the historical development of Western alchemy and its connections to ancient Egypt, Greek philosophy, Hermeticism, astrology, religion and medieval European thought. Alchemists believed that the universe contained hidden principles connecting the physical and spiritual worlds, and that understanding these principles could reveal extraordinary truths about existence. Their investigations combined practical experimentation with symbolism, mysticism and philosophical speculation.Although alchemy is frequently associated with secret formulas, mysterious laboratories and the impossible dream of turning lead into gold, its historical importance extends much further. Early alchemical practices contributed to the development of laboratory equipment, chemical techniques and the systematic study of substances. However, its supernatural claims, including the existence of a Philosopher's Stone capable of producing gold or an elixir granting immortality, have never been scientifically demonstrated.Sylvester's wider research also examines unconventional interpretations of ancient religious traditions, including possible connections between alchemy, the Egyptian god Osiris, the Emerald Tablet, Gnostic writings and the legendary Anunnaki. He proposes that some ancient myths and sacred teachings may contain coded information concerning transformation and the pursuit of eternal life. These interpretations remain speculative and are not established historical or scientific conclusions.

Asteroid sample return missions have brought well preserved samples of the early solar system (that hadn’t been roasted in a fireball) back to Earth for the first time. But those samples, like the OSIRIS-REx sample from asteroid (101955) Bennu, sometimes provide more questions than answers. A new paper, published in Science Advances from researchers at ETH Zurich and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, highlights one of those questions - why Bennu appears to have been born in both the inner and outer solar system - and a possible answer to it. Samples from Bennu are one of the most sought after resources in the world of geology. So when a half a gram of the material made its way to ETH Zurich, Maria Schönbächler and her lab began analyzing it immediately. Specifically, the Professor of Isotope Geochemistry and her students were looking for exactly what her title implied - nucleosynthetic isotopes. Isotopes acted like markers in the early solar system. When the Sun formed 4.6 billion years ago, the dust surrounding it didn’t stir evenly. Different parts of the new star’s orbital plane contained different blends of isotopes - elements like iron, titanium, and chromium had slightly different numbers of neutrons...

A new investigation into the isotopic composition of asteroid Bennu, of which NASA returned samples to Earth, has found it probably formed on the line between hot and cold in the planet-forming disk t...
