#OTD in 1944 the Heavy Tank T26 prototype was finished. This tank had an electric transmission, which made it heavier than the T26E1 (future Pershing) but also easier to drive. The T26 was used in experiments from November 1944 to July 1945. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A decision to build the next generation of American medium tanks was made #OTD in 1943. 200 Medium Tanks T23, 40 T25, and 10 T26 would be built. Only the T26 was successful. The heavily altered Heavy Tank T26E3 was later standardized as the M26 Pershing #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1943 the T26 tank program was revised: only 2 Medium Tank T26 prototypes with an electric transmission would be built. 10 pilot T26E1 tanks with the lighter more reliable torque converter were ordered. This tank evolved into the T26E3 and then the M26 Pershing. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

This is a very good day for the Royal Norwegian Navy.

I have been of the opinion that the UK and T26 would be the best choice for the RNoN, but that politics could potentially interfere, so pleased to see that those fears were unfounded.

#OTD in 1943 the Commanding General of the Army Service Forces declined an ambitious request to build 500 T23 tanks, 500 T25 tanks, 500 T26 tanks, and 500 T71 (M36) tank destroyers. In the end, 2324 GMC M36 alone were built. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Even though a decision was made to move forward with the lighter Heavy Tank T26E1, the Heavy Tank T26 with an electric transmission entered trials anyway #OTD in 1944. The Americans kept to more conventional transmissions in future tank designs. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
