I'm making a Tafl (or Hnefatafl) game board, so you guys can download and play it at home. Tafl games were really popular in medieval norse and northern european cultures, until chess got popular during the 12th century.

I built a prototype to see how well printing and building the Tafl game boards I'm making would work.
It looks cute, but cutting, folding and glueing all the pieces is a bit tedious (and this is the smallest board).
I might have to add a simpler token alternative.
But this is how it looks!

A #Pictish glass gaming piece of c. AD 700-900, probably for a 'tafl' board game, found in the hillfort at Dundurn. The only other example of this type from Britain was discovered at Lindisfarne.

We have found multiple tafl game pieces and game boards, and they are all sligthly different from each other. As is usually the case with ancient games, the rules to all of these are lost. The modern version of hnefatafl is based on a translation of a swedish game called Tablut.

The game pieces are missing, but judging from the hole it is very likely that they would have pegs on the bottom, so they could be placed on the board. An excavation at Lindisfarne led by DigVentures and Durham University began #OTD in 2019. One of the top finds would be a rare glass gaming-piece dating from AD 700-900. It is believed to be a kingpiece from a set used to play a version of ‘tafl’. 📸DigVentures
The piece is made of bright blue glass with exuberant white swirls and crowned with a ring of five white bobbles.

Conical domed glass boss found during excavations of the early medieval hillfort of Dundurn, Perthshire, in 1976-77. It is of the 8/9thC and, like one found at Lindisfarne in 2019, may have been a gaming-piece from a set used to play a version of ‘tafl’. 📸University of Glasgow
The boss is decorated with swirls of white and dark brown glass and is topped with five lesser bosses with swirls of white and blue glass.

I am working on alternate versions of my Hnefatafl game board, using a 7x7 configuration. There are two tafl games that use it, the Scottish "Ard Rí" and the Irish "Brandubh", so I made both versions.

Rare glass king piece from a ‘tafl’ gaming set, a strategy board game played in the Northern British Isles some 1,200 years ago.

The Digventures image shows a dark blue glass gaming piece with white trail decoration, against a black background. It is roughly dome-shaped, with a rounded top, and a flat base. It is made of translucent dark blue glass, which allows the display lighting to pass through it. Across the top is a ring of five white glass bosses; one in the centre, the other four spaced around it, giving the appearance of a crown, indicating that it was likely manufactured to resemble a king. The blue body is decorated with swirling white trails of glass. It is thought to be a king piece for playing a uniquely northern version of 'tafl, a war game played in the British Isles before the arrival of chess in the 11th century. It was discovered during an archaeological dig on the small tidal island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, whose wealthy early medieval monastery was raided by Vikings in AD 793, heralding the start of the Viking Age in Britain. The only other example of this type of glass gaming piece was found at the Pictish hillfort at Dundurn in Scotland.
