Just got a last minute TAship 🥹

At the Catholic school, I at least had a supervising professor who fought for me. But it wasn't enough for me to be extended another TAship.

One grad student was expelled for discussing a graduate student union. It was an affront to suggest grad students needed one.

Engineering: "Turboflush augmentation with critical flowrate bowlnamics" (12 authors, 3 DARPA grants, incorporated into strike drones by 2026)

Physics: "A New Kind of Toilet" (2 authors, funded solely through single TAship of sophomore level required mechanics class, basis of 2076 nobel prize)

One of my managers was kinda making it sound like I might be invited to stick around longer past my initial employment dates?? Which would be cool if so since I still haven't heard back about TAship for next school year.... 🫠

okay my question here- who paid for him to take the class? bc if you're a STEM grad student, you're usually on a TAship or RAship that will only cover tuition for classes approved by your committee, and i don't see how anyone signed off on him taking this as a degree req that would be covered.
Am I reading this correctly?

A grad student ... in Computer Science ... enrolled in an undergraduate seminar ... in the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program ... where he ignored the readings and hijacked discussions to talk about Israel and defend its actions in Gaza?

What the hell?
Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.

Are you, a student, or someone you know interested in pursuing a PhD in geography? Interested in issues related to political ecologies of conservation or wildlife trade? I'm recruiting for next fall for a new member of CCGC (if admitted- 4 years of TAship guaranteed).

lol York offering me a TAship which I desperately want a week after I've signed a contract at another university for the same time. 🙃
I really want this TAship, I'm hoping the other TA will be willing to switch tutorials with me, but I doubt it. Such is life. York waited too long.

HEY! If you TA as a student, you should be coming to 125AB for a workshop “Level up your TAShip” #EntSoc24 #FitinEntsoc! 12:30-2:30pm

Ok, time to do my taxes (i have no idea what I owe bc grad school is cursed: 5 months on fellowship, 4 months on TAship, and 3 separate states 😭)

"An instructor at Stanford University has been suspended"

The ultimate outcome had better be the loss of his TAship. This is not a question of academic freedom; this is the instructor singling out students based on ethnicity for harassment (to say nothing of Holocaust denialism-lite).

When I was at Columbia, there was an undergrad senior in the program who bragged about his nunchuk collection. When central admin heard, midway through spring semester, they stripped him of his TAship and banned him from campus except for the classes (IIRC 1 class?) he needed to take to graduate.

Because I applied to a bunch of grad programs not in Texas and they were the only ones that gave me a scholarship & TAship 😂

But also I really really wanted to go to Alaska! ❤️

I want to get the paperwork sorted in advance of my return in the fall, as I have the time and resources to do it now, and I know I won't then, when I'm embroiled in trying to sort out everything between my department, supervisor, committee, TAship, RAship, scholarship, and full-time job.

I got (mostly) accepted at one of the grad schools I applied to!!!!! 🎉 I'm gonna wait to see if I get any other offers since I was put on the waitlist for TAship at this uni BUT I'm so glad to know that I *will* be going to grad school!!!! 🥹‼️‼️‼️

Pretty sure I'm not getting TAship so I took some time last night & this morning to apply for scholarships! I dunno why I was procrastinating doing this for so long since it really wasn't that bad 😅 I write and complain about my life and finances all the time already lol

Yeah that’s kinda why I’m considering a doctorate (DMA) not because I think it’ll improve my work but explicitly so I could teach at the collegiate level/get access to opportunities only open to students

Wouldn’t do it without a nice TAship lined up tho orz

It was not through the NSF, but I was a party to a recently canceled grant. As a result, we are not certain how to support a particular student for the rest of the term, and now (after course assignments have gone out) I am attempting to rescind my course buyout for the fall to get them a TAship.

Traveling today, so here is a brain dump of my to-do list for next week:
- work on copy edits
- finish marking student assignments for my TAship
- finish current dissertation edits
- brainstorm a short article for NQ
- edited volume intro chapter
- start looking over book for a review. #academia

Hey friends, has anyone successfully written a teaching philosophy when moving from grad TAship to teaching in high school? Because I'm trying to write one and I feel deeply stymied, so I could use advice and possibly someone willing to read this thing to give feedback.

As problematic as those offices were I just had a flash of memory, long repressed, of those claustrophobic closets with no windows on the fifth floor you inherited if were ABD when your TAship ran out. Some careers were lost and souls diminished in those. Still, URL, Campus, LA were all glorious.
November 20, 2024 at 5:21 AM
Pretty much my case as well, though the “funding” was a TAship

📣 Attention all Unit 1 CUPE 3903 members in a PhD program!

Did you know that you have certain rights for the duration of your degree once you have held at least one TAship?

It’s called the Priority Pool.
