I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get going on my TGOC log until now. I’m finally getting going though. #hiking #journalling #TGOC25
Drawing of the side of a hill with a handwritten journal. 8th May 2025- TGOC25 Day 1: Shiel Bridge > Altbeithe Distance: 22 Km Walkers: Solo Weather: Cloudy. then Sunny. Today's the day- the start of the Great Outdoors Challenge 2025. I began by walking out of the Glen Shiel campsite towards Kintail hodge. Here I met other Challengers having breakfast and signing before the start. I carried on under a cloudy sky until I came to a woman sitting by the path. I needed a drink so I stopped beside her and she explained that she had walked the Affric Kintail Way but her boots were giving her grief so she was taking them off. She then walked away in her socks! I walked to the private bothy and stopped for another drink before crossing the footbridge and beginning the walk uphill. As it got hotter I slowed down and the other Challengers passed me by. It seemed to take hours to get to the plateux, where I stopped for a bite to eat before walking to the Camban bothy. I was tempted to stay but I still had a few kid to Alltbeithe, so I rested a while before continuing down really rough tracks to get to a burn about 1 Km from the hostel. I decided this was enough so pitched by Dave and had my first meal of the TGOC, then bed.

There was no problem finding the Deeside Way, it was a quiet path away from the busy A93. I walked into Dess Wood and passed two rambling groups enjoying the sunshine. The route passed through woodlands and by fields before jorning the lane into Kincardine O'Neil. I walked through the village and stopped at the Post Office where I had a second breakfast of coffee and a jumbo sausage and onion roll at the pavement table as I watched the world go by . Once finished , I continued on the DW until I got to Potarch. Crossing the bridge, a short walk got me back into woodland/forestry. This was the least pleasant part of the DW (others differ, I know). It was hilly and there were some nice views but generally it felt like a green factory plus production line, with chunks of forestry cut down. The crushed stone lanes hurt my feet, but at least it was well signposted. I saw more people walking their dogs as I got closer to Banchory. I walked over the bridge and almost immediately came to the Ship Inn where they found me a lovely little room. A shower and a pub meal and I was happy.

Day 2, when it was beginning to dawn on me what I’d let myself in for.

A journal log with a small ink and wash drawing of a loch (lake) with hills in the background, with the caption ‘Looking over Loch na Camaig’. 9th May 2025- TGOC25 Day 2: Alltbeithe > Cougie Distance: 21Km, Walkers: Solo, Weather: Clear, Sunny, hot. I woke up to a clear morning. I had breakfast, broke camp and started walking again by 8.30am. I walked past the hostel and other Challengers having breakfast. I crossed the bridge to Athnamulloch where I stopped for a pee and a drink. Other Challengers passed me in turn. I continued My walk next to forestry plantations, much of them in the process of being cut down. It was still hot and so I still made slow progress. My water filter wasn't working properly and I suffered for lack of water throughout the day. The route took me along the Allt Garbh and across the cut down tree lane under Creag nan Calman. The landscape looked nothing like the forestry plantation green of the OS Map I was following. I got to Cougie by 5.30pm but was too tired to continue uphill to the Bealach Feth na Gamhna as I had planned So I stopped at the lodge where they found me a pitch. I washed and had a lovely hot meal with fellow Challengers before returning to my tent in the hope that tomorrow would be cooler. My feet were starting to give me trouble and I should have been in Fort August by tonight. This was the first of my 2 low points (but the view was beautiful). #hiking

Day 2 - Altbeithe > Cougie. 21.6km. Today I realised that my planning didn’t take into account the hot weather (I’m not a summer walker). I got to Cougie and decided it was enough. Flexibility is key on the #TGOC25

Day 6 - Melgarve Bothy > Laggan. 17.8Km. Stone track, strong sunshine and no shade - it was HOT! My feet were complaining and it took me far longer to get to Laggan than it should have.

Day 6 - hot and slow, but at least it was flat.

A journal log with a small ink and wash drawing of an a lane heading in the direction of woodland, with the caption ‘The River Spey valley’. 13th May 2025- TGOC25 Day 6: Melgarve ne Bothy > Laggan Hostel Distance: 17.8km, Walkers: Solo, Weather: Sunny, clear, hot. This was one of the shortest and also hardest days. I started at 9.00 am but it quickly heated up on the River spey ivervalley. My watch said 31c at one point (on my arm, but still). I started well enough but my feet quickly swelled and were painful through out Most of the day. The woodlands did give some shade but it really wasn't enough. I walked on until the bridge by the Spey Dam where I stopped for a drink and a bite to eat. It was here that the crushed stone tuned to tarmac with obvious evidence of farming. Here I passed a couple putting bikes back on their car, we chatted a little before I started off again. The last 1.5km seemed to take as long as the previous 16km. It was 4pm by the time I got to Laggan Village Hall, but it too 2 hours longer than I would usually do it. I was grateful for the Hall and there were a good few people there, but it was a subdued evening for me - a shower, a dehydrated meal and a bed on the indoor court. And a faint hope that it wouldn't be as hot tomorrow as it was today.
