Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers.

The end of 2025 marks the end of Hugo Larochelle's term as (Founding co-) Editor-in-chief of TMLR. It is an understatement to say that he was indispensable to making TMLR what it is today. Huge thanks to

Near the end of 2025, TMLR got 500 submissions every ~60 days. Most recently: it took 19 days. This is unsustainable for a volunteer team of reviewers and action editors.
TMLR is implementing authorship quotas to help relieve the significant pressure on their time and energy.

TMLR will go on winter break starting December 2. A chance for authors, reviewers, and AEs to all get some much deserved peace and quiet.
Another detail that might be interesting to folks:
"The fraction of desk rejected papers at TMLR used to be about 6% in 2023 but is now at about 53%."
(Important caveat that our policies and stances towards desk rejection have shifted, not just submission quality.)
