Imagine, if you will, that every single road had been privately financed, with tollbooths every few miles. It wouldn't work well, and would be hideously expensive.

This is my only anecdote apart from the one where a car with me, the same future Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and a future MP and Strategic Authority Mayor were approaching the tollbooths on the Humber Bridge, when Tom suddenly said "shit, has anyone got any money?"

Meanwhile, bridge and highway fare collection went the other direction - from staffed tollbooths with a barrier, to open lanes with a camera that drivers can go past at full speed.
Result: more dangerous driving now happens in San Francisco.
