the TPDF began their counterattack and despite the often snide comments of onlookers about the irregular militia against Amin's martial professionals, the TPDF simply smashed them. In battle after battle- Mutukula, Masaka, Mbarara, 2nd Lukaya the Amin's forces were routed.

with Amin claiming the boundary between the countries should be the Kagera river. Nyerere had finally had enough and asked the TPDF leadership if they could beat Amin. Amin had spent the better part of a decade buying massive amounts of military toys and loving his army. The TPDF said yes!

Oh, I mean it's not a fun answer, but the constant coups/mutinies in Africa around their founding. The TPDF was build after a massive mutiny that nearly toppled the government so the government started from scratch as opposed to just assuming a military should exist as a thing- they asked why and

Nyerere had this problem after the supposedly non-political King's African Rifles revolted in the early 1960s. He brought in the Nigerians to cover, completely dissolved the outfit, and spent the next several years building the TPDF from the ground-up as a politically educated military force.

the TPDF formed the Special Duties Unit, who effectively became the quartermasters and logisticians for the liberation struggles across the continent. They stockpiled, inventoried, organized, and guarded thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition. More than that, these stockpiles

set up a new government in Uganda (which didn't work in the long run). So long story short, #3 is that the TPDF crushed the Last King of Scotland in a short, professional, and decisive war, driving out one of the worst dictators in Africa at high cost.

The national leadership called up the reserves, which thanks to the people's army system in place swelled the TPDF from its regular strength of around 40,000 to over 120,000. While many of these reserves just took over garrison duty, they freed up the professionals to act. Beginning in December
