Practical rights only come back if TPMs aren't the focus of the game commercialization model anymore. And that isn't happening unless consumer rights push back against overuse of TPMs. Which is another whole thread in of itself.

Enter digital only licenses, TPMs and supremely detailed EULAs. The big corps have been hoping we'd all switch to a digital only market not because it keeps manufacturing costs down (which they never trickle down to us btw) but because digital only is the TPM domain. TPMs clash with physical media.

Back in the 90s & early 2000s, TPMs with games were near nil. I could take my N64, plug it in an outlet, put my copy of Mario 64 in the slot, and it will work. No authentication, no license checks, no activation requirements, no logins, no digital rights management. No TPMs. This felt like ownership

TPMS sensors are the automotive equivalent of printer ink refills.
I should note that modern cars are already a huge stream of radio data including the hard-coded MAC addresses in your Bluetooth hands free head unit, 5G modems, etc which generally never change.
If you're not already taking precautions on the other stuff, TPMS radio is the least of your worries.

I think @micahflee.com and @eff.org have published some good overviews on automotive privacy — it's basically a pretty hopeless situation for all but the most dedicated and paranoid folks.

As technology progressed, companies wanted more control post purchase. We've now reached a point where entire markets are built around TPMs and their active enforcement, and mega corps are terrified of the 'practical' freedoms they once inadvertently granted to us without a single thought.
