TSFS may have been mostly locked into soundstage sets, especially for Genesis, but it sure did expand the world of the 23rd Century more.
Star Trek III destroyed one Enterprise, but gave us a generous helping of new ships (plus a spacedock) to compensate. The Bird of Prey and Excelsior went on to become fan favourites, but one is not so universally loved.

Reading all the interviews with him in the Muvluv Integral book, where he talks about having his own sketches for TSFs, and then asking his artists to refine those designs, or to make their own TSFs with the same visual shape as his work, since he was primarily a writer, not an artist.

After two STAR TREK features where Kirk takes a backseat in the climax of the film, TSFS returns Kirk to his proper place driving every beat of the action. Even the stunt doubles on a indoor planet set.

Gene stopped every TNG script from becoming a TOS sequel. If you thought Naked Now was lame, imagine every episode like that. He made the show stand completely on its own. He also nixed a number of bad ideas in TSFS, TVH, TFF, and TUC. His notes were really on point.
Gene was a very good showrunner during TOS, and he doesn’t get nearly enough credit. I’ve read the memos as part @facttrek.com. He knew what made the show tick and fix scripts. With TNG, he wanted to push the format and make it different—Riker as lead and Captain as co-lead.

Since I wasn’t able to attend #STLV, I carved out time to rewatch “The Wrath of Khan” and “The Search For Spock” over the past few days.
TWoK is more iconic but I enjoy TSFS so much more. The music, the Klingons, the ships, spacedock, stealing the Enterprise (and its demise)…so good #StarTrek

43. I'm against Spock marrying Saavik in any canon. I don't even care for the Pon Farr scene in TSFS.
Kirk and Spock are Saavik's mentors and parental figures in TWOK. She must choose which of her mentor's paths she'll follow—command or science. So romance with either is just eek.

The special effects have aged pretty well. The soft blue white light that they lit the Federation ships in makes them seem dreamlike and gorgeous. And I think Horner's score for TSFS is even better than his one for TWOK.

For the record, I *do* think TSFS is a weaker movie than TWOK and TVH, but that's because TWOK and TVH are the two best Star Trek movies period, so it's a weaker movie by default. I definitley wouldn't consider TSFS to be an example of the famed Star Trek odd movie curse.

I find it fascinating that two of the least-popular #StarTrek films (TMP and TSFS) had arguably the largest impact on the franchise’s production design.
