I found myself watching The Practice recently and it made TWW make much more sense, in that it’s clearly coming out of that era of workplace dramas.

Anyway the show it’s drawing from more than anything else is ER. They had the same producer and they’re stylistically identical. Everyone credits “walk and talk” to TWW but ER was doing it first

I love The West Wing. This thread is marvellous and 100% accurate. TWW is a wonderfully enjoyable, beautifully acted, and utterly preposterous creation.
Rewatching one of the greatest soaps in history, aka 'The West Wing'. God this is a brilliantly written but incredibly silly show.

To be clear, the Syrian government has killed around a 1000 American soldiers and the joint chief of staff, who is not a political appointee, is asked what he thinks of the optics of Aaron Sorkin's casting choice. It's a great scene, and John Amos acts the hell out of it. That's TWW in a nutshell.
Presumably some unfortunate occupant of the writing room then went 'Aaron, the bag carrier?', so Aaron Sorkin introduces *another* African-American character, Admiral Fitzwallace, the chairman of the joint chief, to tell this person off.

I’m not a massive TWW fan - I find it more interesting than good overall - but I think a lot of the criticism of it is basically asking for it not to be subject to the restrictions of a TV series going out on network television
