<Alt Text 1 of 4> Today we we’re going to step away from the wild things to look at a garden favorite of mine. The plant in question comes in numerous forms that cover a range of plant heights, flower colors and even double or single form flowers. Additionally, this plant is native to the Americas and is generally grown as a flowering annual that is prized for its array of bloom colors and virtues as a cut flower. Has anyone guessed what the TWHD mystery plant is this week? Well, I won’t keep you waiting the plant is a Zinnia. Before we dive into what a Zinnia is let’s take a peek at the name. The name Zinnia which is pronounced ‘ZIN-ya’ is pretty strange sounding among Botanical Latin names because it does not resemble any Latin or Ancient Greek words. The name Zinnia is actually derived from the last name of a German scientist named Johann Gottfried Zinn. Zinn, had an interesting life, he was born in 1727 in Schwabach, Germany. Schwabach is near a more well-known German city; Nuremburg made famous for the post WW2 trials. Schwabach itself is famous for its gold smithing and in 2004 the town celebrated that the tradition had been a thing for five hundred years. As for Zinn, in 1753 he became the director of the Botanic garden of the University of Göttingen and in 1755 he was a professor in its medical facility. He made a noted contribution to horticulture by describing the orchid genus Epipactis in 1757. Two years later in 1759 he died at Göttingen at the age of thirty-one. So, now that we know where the genus name of Zinnia came from, what exactly makes a Zinnia a Zinnia? The first thing you need to know is that a Zinnia is a member of the Aster Family which means that it will have a composite flower that consists of florets (in the center) surrounded by rays (the petals). In a single Zinnia flower Zinnias will, (unless there is a mutation or the flower is deformed) will have twelve petals. Obviously more petals will be present...... <Alt Text 1 of 4> <Alt Text 2 of 4> ...in a double flower but twelve is the normal number. Zinnias are also known for bearing their flowers on long singular stems and generally speaking Zinnias are also annuals, but in their native environments some species are also shrubs and sub-shrubs. Some Zinnias such as (Z. grandiflora) or Rocky Mountain Zinnia are perennial. The majority of Zinnia species are endemic to North America however some species are native to South America. For our intents and purposes the Zinnia you are most likely to be dealing with is Common Zinnia (Zinnia elegans). Common Zinnia is the one you will see at most nurseries and garden centers as it has the easiest growing characteristics and thus has the most noted varieties as there are hundreds of cultivars and hybrids based on this specific species of Zinnia. The most well-known of those hybrids is the Profusion Series which is a cross between (Z. elegans) and Narrowleaf Zinnia (Z. angustifolia). In the Trial Gardens, Zinnias over the last few years have gained a reputation that rivals Marigolds for being easy to grow from seed, dependable and colorful. So it should be no surprise that I have a few pictures showing the range of colors possible for these annual flowers. First we have ‘Envy’ which is a neat pale chartreuse color and a semi if not full-on double flower. These plants produce 3-4 inch blossoms on three foot tall plants and prefer full sun while the seeds germinate in about ten to fourteen days. They don’t call for special soil or fancy fertilizer, just regular irrigation and can do well in larger fifteen gallon or larger sized pots. The only reason I bother to pot these is because the seed is a bit pricey with the average price per packet being about $5.00. Next is a pure white variety of Zinnia from the ‘Key Lime Pie’ seed mix. Key Lime Pie is known for its white flowers as well as its intense chartreuse green flowers. <Alt Text 2 of 4> <Alt Text 3 of 4> But the parade of color does not stop there, because I have other species of Zinnia represented in the test gardens this year. The one pictured is a species of Zinnia you might only see in seed catalogs. This pretty one is a Mexican Zinnia (Z. haageana) and it's specific variety is ‘Aztec Burgundy’. While only a few of them came up from seed they are already quite striking despite their much taller cousins trying to steal the show. -Special note: Some folks might ask why I bother to grow multiple species of a flower. Monoculture even in your flowers is just as bad as monoculture in your food plants. Different species of Zinnia accommodate different pollinators at different times and attracting more pollinators is a good thing. <Alt Text 3 of 4> <Alt Text 4 of 4> Lastly we have the All-American blend and State Fair Mix of Zinnias both of which are old timey styled Zinnas that come in a wide array of colors, and may be single, semi-double, full-double and even ‘pom-pom’ flowered. It does not matter to me which of the two mixes is represented here because they are doing great and the pretty flowers prove it. What isn’t clearly represented here are the Peruvian Zinnias (Z. peruviana) which get about three feet tall and are known for their heat and drought tolerance as well as their cheery red or yellow flowers. The initial sowings of seed seem to have failed but don’t worry I’ve got most of the summer and some seeds left in the packet and as you all know seeds are magic. Likewise, the Candy cane mix didn’t germinate either but I may try again after all it is only July and there is always time for a Zinnia. As per TWHD tradition I’ll leave you with one final thought because I know someone out there is wondering; are Zinnias edible? The answer is yes and no, as Common Zinnias are not known to be safely edible but their flowers do make a pretty garnish and can be floated in beverages. In other species it is the petals that are edible however it is universally noted that they might be a bit bitter so perhaps newly opened flowers. Keep in mind school is still out on their exact edibility and it’s noted they can cause digestive upset in some people but are not toxic or poisonous. -Photo Note: Check this thread for the photos that didn't make it in the main post. Unrelated to today's TWHD post but finally I got the goods! The lion's Mane was about a month late since the weather had bee warm and dry. On Tuesday we had a day of cold rain and then on Wednesday I found this in one of my fave forage spots. Two pounds of Lion's Mane!

This is the State Fair/All American mix and as you can see they are butterfly approved! In the background those are coneflowers (E purpurea 'Purple Magnus') Look at this one! They hadn't really started blooming by the posting deadline of TWHD, This is from the 'Candy Cane' mix sold by Burpee. Much like the last one this spectacular Zinnia is from Burpee's 'Candy Cane Mix'. An interesting mix between the prior yellow and white base ones this 'Candy Cane Mix' Zinnia is no less pretty.
