A: You can move taconite via rail, of course. But it's very, very, heavy. An ore car is dramatically smaller than a standard rail car, and as this railfan forum post puts it, "a loaded taconite train is like ... a coaster wagon filled with concrete."

In Two Harbors and Duluth, Minn. and Marquette, Mich., you'll see so-called "jennies" (specialized rail cars for taconite) driven by rail out onto massive edifices on the lake, "ore docks" where they'll be opened up at the bottom and dumped into a Great Laker via chutes along the sides

The mill is being built by Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota company owned by India-based Essar Group. Mesabi has hired more than 200 workers so far, out of a planned 350 full-time employees at the mine near Nashwauk.

What bothers me is that the communities that really lost those jobs have legit scars, and it’s not even primarily them driving this worldview. This is not the work of people who used to be in taconite mining.

Here's a map of how iron ore mined in Minnesota moves (the red lines). Note the markers for where steel facilities are located, they're where they are because you have to move the stuff on ships.

Moving taconite by dirigible provides the steel mill with hydrogen for the processing as well. Perfect circular economy.
