Another rock sleeping in a tafoni hole - the rock is grey and oval (egg-shaped) and is in a hole in the rock. There are other holes around it, one heart-shaped.

So you know how I love pebbles in the cracks between rocks? Well, I found something equally amazing today - pebbles in tafoni holes!

Can't believe I've never visited Malarrif before - amazing geology, could spend days exploring the beaches and cliffs. Next time :)

Exploring rocky saltwater coastlines, you'll likely find examples of salt weathering. When salt water seeps into pores/cracks, it may evaporate and deposit salt crystals within them. Growth and expansion of the crystals may weaken and break the rock apart to form cavities such as those shown here!

#Tafoni rock formations are often seen in arid and semi-arid areas and deserts. They also occur in some coastal regions, including along the California coast. Tafoni resemble honeycomb-like formations. I took this picture along the #Pescadero coast in San Mateo County.
