#OnThisDay Oct 5 1869: As William W. Eastman and John L. Merriam near completion on their 2500-foot tailrace beneath Mississippi River to extract even more water power from St Anthony Falls, the tunnel collapses and nearly destroys the waterfall for good. Repairs take over 10 years.

I drew a trompe today: falling water entrains air bubbles, drags them down a shaft, and compresses them as pressure rises. A chamber separates the air at depth while the water returns to the tailrace. The machine has no piston or rotating compressor. Its moving part is a watercourse.

Question in my mind about this has been why would headrace, tailrace, service tunnels not all have flooded? And if access tunnels flooded, why would not underground power houses too?

Ok, might be exceptions. Worth a shot.

"Youth Fishing Derby — Eklutna Tailrace." A boy fishes for silver salmon during the run in Alaska.

Ripples circle the angler. The shaded bank frames open water like a doorway.

I think it makes a calm, grounding accent for a reading nook or study.

Assume it’s a corn mill but it may have processed something else. The central boarding in front of the wheel pit looks like the tailrace and the lateral boarding must have been for maintenance access as well as spillways

While inspecting the tailrace after diverting water overnight, Marshall spotted small, shiny flakes caught in the shallow channel. He tested them using simple methods common at the time and concluded they were gold.

Yea they're great! Excited to see how they transform the West Bank. More work is also needed on East Bank, where there's opportunity to also incorporate industrial history. Pillsbury A Mill once had the largest hydro plant in the world underneath it. There's cool archeology there
