So, there's nothing like lefties splaining our own history to us. Don't do it. I am Afro-Latina indigenous. Mayans and Taínos were in the Americas obviously before Mexico was Mexico and Puerto Rico was Puerto Rico.

The Tainos named the island Xaymaca (Jamaica) meaning “lush land” or “land of wood and water”.
Then the Spanish came. They saw the hibiscus flower and named it “Flor de Jamaica” when they brought it from Jamaica to Central America +
