#TalesofTerror today was one of my favourites: illustrations 😁❤️

Students read Poe "The Premature Burial"; Kipling "The Mark of the Beast"; and Jacobs' "The Monkey's Paw" in advance. In class we discussed how the text uses ideas of visual & then I gave them these for images to dissect 😁

This week on #TalesofTerror - Topographies of Terror: The Haunted House 👻🏚

Using c19th short stories by Rhoda Broughton, Mary E. Braddon, and Mary Wilkins Freeman, we interrogated the relationship between narrative form and space; gender entrapment; class isolation; anxieties of modernity & more!

Week 3 of #TalesofTerror and we considered "Tales of Trauma" using extracts from works by @theprofrog.bsky.social and @andysheff.bsky.social with Dickens's "The Signal-Man", Weir Mitchell's "The Case of George Dedlow" and Everett's "Over the Wires".

Tough but great discussions.

This week in my #TalesofTerror module we had much fun when the students were asked them to gather evidence for a "queer" reading of M.R.James's "Oh, Whistle" and I assured them that if I didn't hear giggling they weren't doing it right.

Innuendo and phallic symbols everywhere 🤣

And finally, we considered the advancements of technology such as the X-ray and how it offered new interpretations and possibilities of the 'ghostly'/ 'spectral' and what/how we 'see', in the short story "Röntgen's Curse" (1896)

Last sessions of #TalesofTerror today :(

We talked scholarship vs marketing in generic labels and sub-genre (ghost-story; Horror story; the Weird) in c19th short form and then used the criteria to consider Le Fanu's "The Familiar", Stevenson's "Thrawn Janet" and Atherton's "The Twins".
