Blane Klemek Outdoors: Minnesota's rare prairie chickens still dance among the grassland
Minnesota, with its four ecological provinces — Tallgrass Aspen Parklands, Prairie Parkland, Laurentian Mixed Forest and Eastern Broadleaf Forest — is replete with floristic and faunal diversity. For this reason, our great state is home to numerous and varied species of wildlife, including an array of grouse and grouse-like species of avifauna. Among the many species of grouse and members of the family is a species of special concern, the greater prairie chicken. Indeed, on Minnesota’s list of endangered, threatened and special concern species, the greater prairie chicken holds a distinctive spot on the list as Minnesota’s rarest and special need species of grouse. Only a handful of counties in northwest Minnesota’s western fringe where suitable and expansive critical grassland habitat still exist — primarily on public land and private land owned and managed by the conservation organization The Nature Conservancy — harbors this unique and important species of grassland-dependent grouse. Prairie chickens, once exceedingly abundant pre-European settlement and resultant prairie grasslands’ massive conversion to agriculture and rangeland throughout the Great Plains, was once described by early settlers as “numberless”. I remember the first time I ever observed prairie chickens. My University of North Dakota ornithology class gathered in ground...
