Tariffs get their name from Tarifa, a pretty Andalusian port just west of Gibraltar which was base to notorious pirates who used to mug traders passing between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

This is the great little Plusia moth that is the Accent Gem - Ctenoplusia accentifera - really tiny and with great character, perhaps my favourite? - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of March 2026. It's never common and I have seen 44 before over 14 years - so that's 3 per year! And another butterfly from me! I don't often look at them - so this is only my second ever of this species - Provence Hairstreak - Tomares ballus, but really nice looking! I found it in a cow's drinking trough and lifeless, but thought i would try and get it identified (thanks to Mick Richardson - Granada Wildlife for help with that!) So, to get the best photo I could of this 'dead' butterfly, I tried drying it off and it twitched! And then it came round - what a great looker! Not sure if it will thank me, but I've done my good deed! - moth-trapping at CIMA, Tarifa, Cadiz Province, Andalucia, Spain on the 14th of March 2026. I walked all the way to Lidl for my weekly shop and it took me a good hour walking back with rest stops! You don't realise how heavy your weekly shop is when you always get it in the car! I couldn't leave this photo out - so, I am going for the rarity of 4 photos in a post!!
