the funniest thing is the actual way to make it cheaper is to leverage your law making power and the defacto monopoly and collective bargaining power of your entire taxbase to get things cheaper than private jndustry can and they're hoping desperately you try anything but that

I like that the distribution of 5 opening stores throughout burroughs seems to be an approach to fairness. Fairness, like privacy (and so many species) seems to be on verge of extinction. Hopefully, this effort will amount to more than one final death rattle & catch on elsewhere.

No, for the past 40 or so years, since townships never approve building bonds for the infrastructure for new housing, towns have expanded their taxbase by outsourcing the infrastructural development to tract builders, and that cost is rolled into the housing cost, with maintenance to HOAs.

This means that councils and mayors cannot finance themselves by growing their local economy and taxbase - they are disconnected from their local economy.

Honestly, I think there just is genuine belief among many that there's enough people with Elon Musk-like wealth in the UK taxbase to appropriate the wealth of/enough scroungers to cut the welfare of to run the government indefinitely (or, at least the things one likes vs. the things one doesn't).

Not a silly question at all, it's the most important one. Part of the answer as said below is a comparative advantage argument - but it is also possible to combine an equalisation system that provides a minimum floor of resource for everyone with the incentives that growing the taxbase provides
