Independence Day in Georgia

In Tbilisi, fireworks were let off as a protest within a protest. Only yesterday, activist Saba Baghdavadze was sentenced to 30 days in jail for doing just that.

On 9 April 1989, Moscow crushed a pro-independence demonstration in Georgia. 21 protesters were murdered by Soviet troops and 100s were injured.

At this very moment, at 04:20 the new protesters are holding a memorial for those lost in the ongoing fight for freedom

I also want to repost the words of Kakha Kintsurashvili outside the New Theatre in #Georgia today, just before the march began.

The 40 year old actor spoke movingly, the words here are a translation of the post by the TbilisiLife TG channel.

A medium shot of four people sitting closely together on a wooden park bench on a dark brick pavement in Tbilisi. Two central figures are young women in striking, traditional Georgian National Dress, featuring deep and bright blue robes, kaba (head coverings with gold trim), and complex braided hairstyles. A third person, on the left, also wears this blue costume, looking down and adjusting their own braid. On the right, an adult woman wearing a modern copper-colored blouse and black pants leans in closely, her focus entirely on the hand of the woman next to her. She is carefully adjusting a sleeve cuff with intense concentration, ensuring the costume is perfect. The lighting is low and dramatic, highlighting the textures of the rich fabrics, the gold trim, and the human connection of preparation. The background is a deeply shadowed park with indistinct blurry foliage and structures. The woman on the right has a bag strap over her shoulder and wears cream-colored shoes.
