Ice (ice baby):
- Classed as an oxide mineral

- There's no ice in the NHM collections but there are two casts of a 35g hailstone which fell in 1878 #minerals
A grey circular plaster cast with a smaller hemispherical white lump in the centre which resembles a brain. This is a cast of a hailstone which fell in the suburbs of London on the 23rd June 1878. It weighed 35g. Specimen from the Natural History Museum, London's collections. Black and white photographs of four snowflakes. They all have six fold symmetry. Three of them consist of hexagons with some radial patterns. The fourth is also a hexagon but it has some "spines" coming out of all six corners. On display in the Natural History Museum, London. A label can partially be seen which says: ... quartz-like structure of linked tetrahedra of H2O molecules (dipoles). Ice (H2O) crystallises in at least five polymorphous forms and only one of them is known to be stable under natural conditions. Common ice, including snow and frost, has a hexagonal tridymite-like structure consisting of liked H2O molecules (dipoles) (see Crystal Symmetry wall-case E2). The magnified photographs of snow crystals shown illustrate the variety of the skeletal and dendritic growths which are formed by the freezing of water vapour. On display in the Natural History Museum, London.
