Arm unleashes ASR upscaling to boost mobile gaming performance
### About the Author By Ryan Daws | 19th March 2025 https://twitter.com/gadget_ry Categories: Android, API, Developer, Gaming, iOS, Open Source, Ryan Daws is a senior editor at TechForge Media with over a decade of experience in crafting compelling narratives and making complex topics accessible. His articles and interviews with industry leaders have earned him recognition as a key influencer by organisations like Onalytica. Connect with him on X (@gadget_ry), Bluesky (@gadgetry.bsky.social), and/or Mastodon (@gadgetry@techhub.social) * * * At GDC, Arm launched ASR (Accuracy Super Resolution)—an upscaling technology promising to boost mobile gaming performance without compromising fidelity and battery life. For years, a fundamental challenge has plagued mobile game developers: how to strike the perfect balance between visuals and performance. Thanks to ASR, that difficult choice will be less of a problem. First announced last year, Arm ASR is now available to all mobile game developers. Plugins for both Unreal Engine and Unity are expected to be released later this year. ### What exactly is Arm ASR? ASR is an intelligent upscaling solution crafted by Arm to enhance gaming performance without any detrimental impact on visual fidelity. The technology works by rendering specific stages of a frame at a lower resolution before intelligently upscaling them. This process significantly reduces the workload on the GPU and lowers power consumption. Crucially, this efficiency allows for the implementation of complex graphics and advanced lighting effects on mobile devices. The result is that developers can achieve visually richer mobile games while ensuring efficient resource utilisation and effectively combating thermal throttling, a common issue that can negatively affect the overall gaming experience for users. To encourage widespread adoption and foster innovation, Arm ASR is being made available as an open-source solution under the MIT license. This invitation extends to developers across the globe, encouraging them to explore its capabilities and discover how it can elevate their games. ### Arm ASR: Bridging the gap between performance and fidelity The foundation of Arm ASR lies in the adaptation of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR2) technology. FSR2 was initially designed to provide portable solutions that bridge the performance gap between PC and console gaming. Arm has now tailored this technology specifically for the unique demands of mobile platforms. A key feature of this adaptation is the inclusion of highly efficient shaders, which significantly reduce both GPU load and the required memory bandwidth. This optimisation is particularly beneficial for devices with more constrained memory bandwidth, enabling them to achieve substantial performance gains. In terms of visual output, Arm ASR employs temporal upscaling methods. This technique combines information from multiple consecutive frames to generate higher-quality images from lower-resolution inputs. This approach provides developers with familiar APIs and configuration options, making integration smoother. In practical testing scenarios, Arm ASR has demonstrated superior results in rendering fine details such as thin tree branches and sharp edges to ensure a more accurate and visually-pleasing representation. Benchmark tests conducted on a complex scene rendered on a device powered by an Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU at a resolution of 2800×1260 showcased the impressive capabilities of Arm ASR. The technology achieved a 53% increase in frame rates when compared to rendering at the native resolution. This performance boost directly translates into smoother and more responsive gameplay and extended battery life, both of which are critical factors for mobile gamers. ### Major game engines and studios embrace Arm ASR Arm has prioritised compatibility, ensuring that Arm ASR integrates seamlessly with major game engines. A plugin for Unreal Engine 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5 is currently available on Epic’s Fab store, and a Unity plugin is actively in development and expected to be released soon. The power of Arm ASR was demonstrated in the ‘Mori’ demo, an Unreal Engine 5 project that utilised its innovative desktop renderer for mobile. The results clearly highlighted Arm ASR’s ability to maintain intricate visual details while simultaneously enhancing performance. As demonstrated in the accompanying video, activating the Arm ASR plugin within Unreal Engine led to an improvement in frames-per-second (FPS) by up to 30%, resulting in better performance and significant power savings, all without any discernible difference in visual quality. Integrating Arm ASR into Unreal Engine is designed to be a straightforward process. Game developers simply need to enable the Arm ASR plugin, configure their project settings to utilise Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA), and then verify the integration using console commands. To further assist developers, comprehensive documentation, illustrative sample code, and detailed integration guides are readily available as part of an Arm Learning path and a dedicated tutorial video. These resources ensure that developers have all the necessary tools and information to implement Arm ASR effectively within their projects. Several prominent game studios have already recognised the potential of Arm ASR and have integrated it into their development workflows. These include Enduring Games, Infold Games, and Sumo Digital, all of whom have reported improved game performance while maintaining the same high level of visual quality. ### Powering the future of mobile gaming Plans are already in motion to extend the compatibility of Arm ASR to encompass a wider range of platforms, ensuring that its benefits can be leveraged by an even broader community of developers. Future updates are also planned to further optimise performance and introduce exciting new features based on valuable feedback from the developer community and other advancements in technology. Arm ASR represents a significant step forward in the evolution of mobile gaming. It empowers developers to deliver high levels of performance without having to make compromises on visual quality. By embracing this open-source technology, developers can deliver immersive and fluid gaming experiences that their users can thoroughly enjoy, all while mitigating the frustrating issue of thermal throttling on mobile devices. **See also:****Discord releases free Social SDK for game developers at GDC** **Looking to revamp your digital transformation strategy?** Learn more about Digital Transformation Week taking place in Amsterdam, California, and London. Apple adds official Vision Pro support to Godot game engine
### About the Author By Ryan Daws | 24th April 2025 https://twitter.com/gadget_ry Categories: Development Tools, Gaming, Metaverse, Open Source, Platforms, Swift, Virtual Reality, Ryan Daws is a senior editor at TechForge Media with over a decade of experience in crafting compelling narratives and making complex topics accessible. His articles and interviews with industry leaders have earned him recognition as a key influencer by organisations like Onalytica. Under his leadership, publications have been praised by analyst firms such as Forrester for their excellence and performance. Connect with him on X (@gadget_ry), Bluesky (@gadgetry.bsky.social), and/or Mastodon (@gadgetry@techhub.social) * * * Apple has begun contributing official support for its Vision Pro headset to the popular Godot game engine. Ricardo Sanchez-Saez, a senior iOS engineer working on Apple’s visionOS team, announced the effort via a pull request (PR) submitted to the Godot project on GitHub. This first contribution lays the foundational groundwork for running Godot applications natively on the visionOS platform. “We’re really excited to be working with the Godot community on adding visionOS support,” said Sanchez-Saez. “We’ve attempted to follow Godot’s coding standards and a high-quality bar for our contributions. We hope that our contributions align with Godot’s goals.” He also acknowledged the potential complexity, stating, “even though we have tried to split the changes into smaller self-contained PRs, we acknowledge that some of these PRs can be of considerable size.” ### Strategic goals for Vision Pro and Godot: Planar and immersive experiences Apple’s immediate objectives for integrating visionOS with Godot are twofold. Firstly, they aim to enable existing Godot games and applications to run natively within a standard planar window on the Vision Pro headset. Secondly, and perhaps more excitingly for developers exploring spatial computing, they intend to facilitate the creation of fully immersive experiences through a new, dedicated Godot visionOS VR Plugin. To manage the review process effectively, Apple has structured the work into three distinct, sequential PRs: 1. **Native visionOS platform:** This initial PR establishes the core platform support, heavily based on the existing iOS codebase to maximise code reuse. (This PR is the one currently submitted). 2. **Swift integration & SwiftUI lifecycle:** This subsequent step will add the capability to compile and link Swift files within Godot, replacing the standard main.mm entry point on visionOS with the SwiftUI application lifecycle. This is crucial for launching immersive scenes. 3. **Vision Pro VR plugin:** The final planned stage will introduce the specific plugin required for developers to build and deploy immersive VR experiences using Godot on the Vision Pro. Sanchez-Saez clarified the rollout plan: “Even though we have a working version including points 2 and 3, those PRs are not up yet. Our current plan is to open them sequentially, after each of the previous PRs merge.” ### Leveraging existing code The technical approach detailed in the first PR involves creating a new native visionOS platform definition within Godot. Recognising the similarities with iOS, the Apple team has introduced a new _drivers/apple_embedded_ directory. This allows code that is common to both iOS and visionOS (but not macOS) to be shared, mirroring the existing drivers/apple folder used for code applicable across all Apple platforms. “The platform-specific logic… was refactored, and now the bulk of the implementation is on drivers/apple_embedded,” explained Sanchez-Saez. “The platforms provide small subclasses that specialise the concrete aspects that are different between platforms.” A key technical constraint highlighted is that the new visionOS platform within Godot will not include OpenGL support, as the underlying operating system itself does not support it. Metal will be the rendering backend. ### A call for community input The code-sharing approach impacts documentation structure. The existing _EditorExportPlatformIOS.xml_ file – which defines export options – has been renamed to _EditorExportPlatformAppleEmbedded.xml_ and moved to the shared directory, as most options now apply to both iOS and visionOS. Apple is specifically requesting community guidance on how best to handle platform-specific documentation nuances within this shared structure or via modifications to the documentation tooling. Testing thus far has focused on the ‘Platformer’ demo project, verifying functionality on both iOS and visionOS using the Mobile and Forward+ renderers with Metal. However, Apple is seeking community assistance in testing several areas where their internal setups differ from typical external developer environments: * **Plugin embedding:** Testing the export template’s ability to correctly embed and link third-party plugins at export time on visionOS. * **Direct export/deployment:** Verifying Archive/IPA export and ‘One-Click-Deploy’ functionality, which the team couldn’t get working reliably, potentially due to differences in developer account configurations. * **ios_deploy:** Testing deployment using the older ios_deploy tool (used pre-Xcode 14) or advising if support for it can be deprecated and removed to simplify the codebase. This contribution marks a potentially pivotal moment for Godot developers, opening up Apple’s spatial computing platform. It also represents a notable step for Apple in collaborating directly with a major open-source game engine community to support its latest hardware. The structured approach and call for feedback suggest a desire for genuine integration, paving the way for potentially rich immersive experiences built with Godot on Vision Pro. **See also:****EU DMA: Apple and Meta hit with first major fines** **Looking to revamp your digital transformation strategy?** Learn more about Digital Transformation Week taking place in Amsterdam, California, and London. UNIGINE 2.19.1 boosts photorealism, VR upscaling, and more
### About the Author By Ryan Daws | 16th December 2024 https://twitter.com/gadget_ry Categories: Developer, Development Tools, Gaming, Platforms, SDK, Virtual Reality, Ryan Daws is a senior editor at TechForge Media with over a decade of experience in crafting compelling narratives and making complex topics accessible. His articles and interviews with industry leaders have earned him recognition as a key influencer by organisations like Onalytica. Under his leadership, publications have been praised by analyst firms such as Forrester for their excellence and performance. Connect with him on X (@gadget_ry), Bluesky (@gadgetry.bsky.social), and/or Mastodon (@gadgetry@techhub.social) * * * UNIGINE 2.19.1 introduces several notable features that should appeal to developers and professionals across a range of industries. From upgrades to photorealistic rendering, to enhanced tools for virtual reality and animation, UNIGINE has delivered enhancements designed to elevate the creative and technical potential of its platform. ### Photorealism with SSRTGI UNIGINE takes another leap towards photorealistic rendering with improvements to its Screen-Space Ray-Traced Global Illumination (SSRTGI) technology. The overhaul in ray distribution across hemispheres seeks to deliver more natural and lifelike visuals. Gamma correction issues for Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) have also been resolved, ensuring more accurate renderings whether viewed in the standard buffer or in debug visualisation mode. Additionally, the unwanted overlap of SSAO onto reflections has been addressed, resulting in cleaner and more realistic reflective effects. ### VR gets a DLSS and FSR performance boost VR developers will be pleased to hear that version 2.19.1 extends support for NVIDIA DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 2.2 upscaling technologies to such projects. These tools, originally introduced in version 2.18.1, are pivotal in reducing the pixel rendering load while maintaining visual fidelity. Their implementation in VR ensures smoother and more fluid experiences, particularly when working with resource-intensive applications or higher resolutions. ### SpiderVision and WebStream plugin improvements The SpiderVision plugin, a staple for advanced visualisation projects, has received upgrades aimed at improving usability. New undo and redo functionality, multi-selection capabilities in Projection Setup widgets, and intuitive UI tooltips are just a few of the enhancements implemented to SpiderVision. The introduction of a “Borderless” window type in the API adds further flexibility for applications demanding seamless visual integration. UNIGINE’s WebStream plugin was a major addition in version 2.19, enabling the streaming of audio and video frames rendered by a UNIGINE application via WebRTC. In this release, the platform extends those capabilities by allowing streams from any camera in a scene to be broadcast to separate web browsers. This latest WebStream feature makes it possible to provide diverse perspectives to various clients, whether on mobile devices or desktops. The ability to open multiple browser instances showcasing different camera views further underlines this update as a potential game-changer in collaborative and remote work settings. ### Animation previews and USD support Animations have long been a focal point for UNIGINE, and version 2.19.1 introduces a built-in animation preview tool in the Asset Browser. This new feature simplifies workflows by allowing developers to preview animations before applying them to Skinned Mesh objects, removing unnecessary steps while expediting the creative process. For users working with Universal Scene Description (USD) files, this update builds on the export features introduced in version 2.19 by now including USD import functionality. Developers can handle usda, usdc, and usdz file formats directly within the UNIGINE ecosystem, facilitating smoother workflows between content creation tools. Furthermore, the USD Export plugin has been rebranded as the USD Exchanger and is now accessible across all SDK editions, including the free Community Edition. ### Streamlined plugin creation with ImGui integration Those who wish to extend UNIGINE’s editor capabilities will find much to appreciate with the Dear ImGui graphical interface library. The release includes an “ImGuiSamplesPlugin” available through the Add-On Store, designed to help developers create custom plugins with ease. Three samples demonstrate the plugin’s capabilities: * **Spline Editor:** A showcase for using the Undo/Redo API, customised visualisation, and hotkey remapping in spline editing. * **Editor (Immediate Mode):** Demonstrates the creation of simple plugins in real-time using ImGui-like principles, with an interactive polygon manipulation example. * **Components:** Highlights how users can generate and assign C++ components to nodes within the editor, making real-time adjustments to parameters. ### Other noteworthy additions in UNIGINE 2.19.1 The update also includes several smaller tweaks and improvements that further improve the SDK’s performance and usability: * **OpenXR hand tracking** and support for Linux systems. * **Faster GUI rendering,** claimed to be up to two times more efficient. * **Performance boosts,** such as optimised hashmaps and improved Editor quality-of-life features. * **Force-feedback support** for steering wheel controllers, catering to simulation projects. * **New developer tools,** including a sample physics-based robot arm with a kinematic chain and a free learning course for C++ developers. Additionally, user account registration has been simplified by allowing new accounts to be created directly from the SDK browser. UNIGINE 2.19.1 brings meaningful new features such as VR upscaling, greater USD file support, and tools for plugin development. With these latest enhancements, the platform aims to advance its position as a robust choice for demanding, professional-grade projects in gaming, simulation, training, and beyond. _(Image Credit:UNIGINE)_ **See also:****2024 Developer Ecosystem: Shedding AI fears, improving DevEx** **Looking to revamp your digital transformation strategy?** Learn more about Digital Transformation Week taking place in Amsterdam, California, and London.
