Oracle's Its $38bn loan for Stargate data centers matures in 4 years (with two 1YR extensions). It can't pay them without the revenue from OpenAI, who doesn't have the money to pay anyway. Oracle *DOES NOT HAVE* the money to pay its debts.

I know this sounds extreme, but hear me out. Oracle’s $38 billion debt deal is a monstrosity, structured to have interest-only payments until construction is complete, and must be paid within four years, though it can be extended to six years. TechInAsia reports that Vantage Data Centers (Oracle’s partner on the project) is working to connect 1.3GW of power “by late 2027” for the project in Wisconsin, though no substantive details exist as to how any of this happens. TechInAsia also adds another note: that utility and transformer lead times could stretch, and the structure of the loan is such that there’s “little cushion” before Oracle has to start paying the principal on the loan. This is extremely concerning if you spend any time reading Oracle’s earnings, and buddy, that’s all I’ve fucking done for several days. Oracle’s interest has spiralled from $866 million in Q2 FY2025 to $1.057 billion in Q2 FY2026, and is only set to grow as Oracle builds more and more data centers for OpenAI. Oracle expects to spend $50 billion in capex in the fiscal year 2026 as of its last quarterly earnings in December 2025, an increase of $15 billion from its estimate from the previous quarter. I imagine these “estimates” will magically increase next quarter too. Based on TD Cowen’s maths, Oracle needs at least another $100 billion if it intends to complete the 4.5GW of capacity that OpenAI has asked for. To make matters worse, in Oracle and OpenAI’s September 23, 2025 post, Oracle intends to build 10GW of capacity in total by 2030, with most of the remaining 5.5GW of capacity remaining unnamed and unplanned. That 5.5GW, based on TD Cowen’s maths, would require another $231 billion, most of it in the next year or two. How did OpenAI go from needing $40 billion by the end of 2026 then only another $17 billion in 2027 to raising $40 billion by the end of 2026 (receiving $22.5 billion of it on December 31 2025) and needing $100 billion. Why? What’s the reasoning? Its business hasn’t materially changed in that time — it was working on its consumer device for over a year before that, ChatGPT’s growth has slowed, and it has yet to start paying Oracle for its data centers. Then there’s the fact that my own reporting suggests that OpenAI actually burned $8.67 billion on inference between January and September 2025 on around $4.3 billion of revenue, or more than three times the $2.5 billion in inference costs reported in the first half of 2025 by The Information (a story that also reported OpenAI made $4.3 billion in the first half of the year). I believe the reason is simpler: OpenAI has nearly burned through the $22.5 billion from SoftBank already, and its burnrate is somewhere to the tune of $5 billion or more a month, and that’s before it has to start paying Oracle. Even if you somehow disagree, explain to me how OpenAI pays Oracle $300 billion starting in 2027 when OpenAI estimates it will make, at least as of Q3 last year, $30 billion in revenue in 2026 and $60 billion of revenue in 2027 and have negative cash flow in both years. Then explain to me how this company gets to those revenue targets. While OpenAI claims it’s already at $20 billion of annualized revenue, there’s vast delta between “making $1.67 billion in a single month” and “consistently making $1.67 billion every single month of the year and then somehow raising that to consistently making $2.5 billion to $3 billion a month onward.” And just to be clear, $3 billion a month will not be sufficient to pay its Oracle bills.
