14. Arcane Monstrosity
Well, it was only a matter of time until there was an actively bad one. A floating, abstract techbase where you fight grunts two-at-a-time with an easy setpiece at the end. Not monstrous at all. It's false advertising, really.

1. The Crucial Error
Starting off strong with a techbase map, featuring many new AD-exclusive grunt enemies. This map is dense, with passages doubling back on themselves, giving the impression of a sprawling base in a small footprint.

All techbase video game art, from Doom to now, is trying to feel as cool as the Nostromo & the facility in ALIENS.

If you're gonna take forever to do something, you might as well spend forever adding detail.

People say Techbase maps are boring, but that's because you gotta speak up and ask for the wifi password, I hate talking to people, too, but you have to ask or you won't get it

i just played it and holy shit

they straight up built a techbase around a mansion

It's also kinda hard to judge the two of them against each other
Scourge is a third techbase level, but Dissolution only gets new level themes once the level design starts faltering, but Scourge has more annoying new enemies, but Dissolution's new ones are mostly reskins...

Doll's Nest takes aim at Armored Core and Dark Souls only to bullseye on Lost Izalith.

It's compelling but disappointing, and all the more disappointing for being compelling. Not terrible, but emphatically "just okay."

Doll's Nest is a 3rd person action game in a post-apocalyptic and post-humanity monolithic techbase, complete with dark corners, labyrinthine corridors, precarious platforming, and many (many) wide op...

I definitely still prefer quake's gameplay and aesthetic to doom's, but there are some Neat Areas in this to go through that aren't usual the usual techbase or hell castle, which is nice

Two maps in one day! Even if the second one is another remake/remix.

Alkaline is pretty cool if you're into the techbase tileset? Also, for something completely different but very cool: the Bonk Jam. (Also, Arcane Dimensions is rumored to be getting an update by the end of the year.)

This also solves an issue that I see rarely discussed. Usually techbase maps are the first one, maybe the second too. But then it's all castles. Which also translates to enemies. With the timetravelling gimmick, there are fantasy monsters in the past and modern mooks in the future. And the […]

Played a level of Dawn of the Machine earlier where you peel away the facade of a fantasy village/castle to reveal it's actually a techbase underneath and, like, what can I say? MachineGames are masters of their craft.

MAP04: STANK
By Death Bear

It's not a sewer. It's a techbase with caves.

Nothing to say.

MAP03: STINK
By Death Bear

It's not a sewer? It's a techbase map with brown waterfall textures. What are we doin' here.

Can be no-mo-d in under 30 seconds.

Gameplay is good though. It makes good use of the space in "you can just leave" setpieces.

Grade: C
Difficulty: D-
MAP02: DEPARTURE

What a midi. Trepidation, seriousness, fear... you may have only reached the very tippy top of the iceberg, but, you're in it now.

Sewer Backrooms? I changed the midi to stock music and the architecture still did its job.

Grade: A-
Difficulty: D, which is a BIG spike from EZ-.

SEWERLUST MAP01: DETOUR
By Myolden

Oh no! Somebody backed up the toilet. Correction, ALL the toilets. Doom City is overflowing with sewage. Everybody is ankle-deep in shit from here on out.

What an atmos we have here. Twinkling stars, hypnotic sewage oozing from every crack, & an entrancing midi.

The strangest part of this map's story is... it *did* get another chance at life.

It was forged anew, a map driven by grief and admiration transformed into one about longing... girlhood, lost dreams and new life.

It feels like a cruel twist of fate that yet another outside force halted.
