Students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are receiving GCSE, BTec and other Level 2 qualification results, with a new digital option being introduced in more than 750 schools in England. From 11:00 BST, pupils at participating schools can access their grades through the Education Record app, although they will still receive their results in person at school or college first. The app is intended to make it easier for students to keep a permanent record of their qualifications and share them with colleges and future employers. The government hopes the system will reduce paperwork for both students and teachers. The results come amid wider plans in England to expand technical education. Schools and colleges are expected to offer more technical subjects, including areas such as manufacturing and artificial intelligence, alongside academic subjects from Year 10. Students are also receiving results for BTec Tech Awards, BTec Firsts, BTec Level 2 Technical courses and Cambridge Nationals. More than 360,000 vocational and technical qualification results were issued last year. Another major issue is the number of students continuing to study GCSE English and maths after failing to achieve grade 4 or above. In England, pupils who do not reach this standard generally continue studying these subjects alongside their next course. Nearly a quarter of English and maths GCSE entries last year were taken by people aged 17 or older, most of whom were young people resitting examinations. The government is considering a new qualification designed as a stepping stone towards GCSE resits, particularly for students who have repeatedly struggled with examinations. Results data also continues to show differences between groups and regions, including a persistent gap in attainment between disadvantaged pupils in different parts of England. This is the third year in which GCSE grading has returned to pre-pandemic standards across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, following the disruption caused by cancelled examinations in 2020 and 2021.
