The early tedbecca stuff is generally better because it doesn't devolve into character assassination or weird moralising over how wrong Rebecca/[not Ted] is.

what show creators fail to understand when they don't make certain ships canon is that it's often a big fumble. you have two well written characters with chemistry, which is super hard to accomplish in the first place, and refuse to expand on it? there better be a GOOD reason.
