I posted a couple of treehoppers from this year as part of my 2023 favorites list, but the year had one more treehopper species for me which I hadn't encountered! This one looks like telamona reclivata, a creature seemingly very happy on mossy oak branches. 🌿🦗

Great question! It's not very difficult to determine the sex of treehoppers (or many other hoppers). Females have ovipositors; to make room, their abdominal segments scrunch up. Males just need to copulate; no segment scrunching. Images from this terrific site: auth1.dpr.ncparks.gov/bugs/hg.php

Well according to Bugguide.net it seems like my hopper nugget might be Telamona ampelopsidis, the Virginia Creeper Treehopper, a species that is highly variable in appearance. Which makes sense as Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, is EVERYWHERE in my yard 😂
So this weird little nugget I posted the other day might be something new, at least according to Inaturalist😁

Borderland State Park, Massachusetts, USA. 2025-07-05.

1) Toxomerus syrphid fly

2) Membracid, Smiliinae, Telamona reclivata perhaps?

3) Tytthonyx soldier beetle (Cantharidae)

4) Deltometopus cf amoenicornis, which is NOT in Elateridae.
