Nowt doing today cos after I’d done my chores the wind was up and the rain came. So no #WestrayBirding today but here’s a clip of a young Hen Harrier I spent half an hour watching as it preened itself in glorious winter sun. Video using iPhone 13 mini (on 3x) and Leica Televid 82 (on 50x).
A 20 second clip thru the Leica APO Televid 82. Bright blue near cloudless sky. Sun behind me. Wind side on, constant 25mph gusting up to 35mph. Image is clean, colours true to the day, good DOF. Wind vibration is obvious (look at horizon line). Halo is artefact of phonescoping. #BirdingGear 2/8

I’m beginning to realise that lugging 5.5kg of scope and tripod over long distances is less and less appealing. I’ve got a Leica APO 77 Televid, with a Manfrotto 190CPkit tripod and 701RC2 head. The scope stays, but any ideas for either carrying what I have now, or lighter setups? #birdinggear
