2. Reset your brain by changing the font on your manuscript. That way, you'll be more likely to spot spelling mistakes, and you'll pay closer attention, instead of just skimming the text. #TenThingsAboutEditing

3. Read your work aloud. It helps you work out if a phrase is too long, helps you refine your dialogue and highlights anything that sounds clumsy or odd. It's the best editorial tool you have - and it's completely free... #TenThingsAboutEditing

9. Does every scene have a purpose (be that to advance the plot, create connections between characters, build tension, expand the world, etc)? If not, however beautifully-written it is, you might consider cutting it. #TenThingsAboutEditing

5. Think about your characters. Are they distinct enough from each other? Do they all have a purpose within the plot and a relationship to the main character? Do you believe in them? If not, now's the time to fix them... #TenThingsAboutEditing

4. Consider plotting your key scenes on a piece of graph paper. Identify the areas of tension, and where are the tension relaxes. Are you maintaining tension throughout? Are you allowing enough breathing space between dramatic scenes for your characters (and reader) to relax? #TenThingsAboutEditing
