In the depths of the Great Depression, Hispanic pecan-shelling workers in Texas endured sweatshop conditions to earn $2 to $3 a week. In 1938, 22-year-old Emma Beatrice Tenayuca led 12,000 workers, mostly women, in a strike for higher wages. /1

In 1933, Tenayuca was inspired to join the labor movement when she joined striking cigar factory workers. She began working with the Workers Alliance of America, and also led marches, sit-ins and other demonstrations protesting issues directly affecting the Mexican American community. /4

When the Southern Pecan Shelling Co. announced a 20% pay cut, around 12,000 Mexican American workers walked out en masse on Jan. 31, 1938. They chanted “Emma, Emma” and elected Tenayuca as their leader. The strike lasted 37 days and was met with police brutality and hundreds of arrests. /6

Tenayuca was born in 1916 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born into a large, blue-collar family, and her grandfather instilled in her a strong interest in the hardships of Mexican Americans and a knowledge of the political activity that could address those hardships. /2
