this was my first time re-reading Dragon Ball in a while, maybe like seven or eight years since the last time
not as deadly-serious as other Jump classics (but still *mean* when it wants to be) like Fist of the North Star, JoJo, or even Saint Seiya, and maybe that's why it has such worldwide appeal

Sadly that applies to all characters. They don't have an actual role in the plot. They just beat up some random soldiers.
I guess Toriyama banked on Toei to fill in the blanks there. But Toei does not even know what to do with Piccolo other than killing him over and over. Nevermind Tenshinhan.

I will say, the transition between Tenshinhan and Goku being the "main character" was a bit wobbly. Having the cooker break early instead of during the fight felt like Toriyama wanting to jump to Goku fighting already. Even the chapter title is just like "yeah, Ten goofed, it's the Goku show again"

Krillin's death kickstarts the arc. Goku "dies" shortly after, so a good part of the arc really is just the surviving humans pushed to their absolute limits and problem-solving how to beat a literal demon. Roshi really out here like "don't fuck up or else Yamcha will be humanity's last hope"
