For three hundred years, the secret to making pastel de Tentúgal remained sealed within the walls of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Natividade in Portugal. When the last nun in the convent died in 1898, the pastry would have died with her, if not for a group of local women who worked to make it the lifeblood of the village. Now at least half of the pastel de Tentúgal made in this village is shipped to cafes and bakeries across Portugal. We visited Pastelaria Afonso, one of the oldest and most famous purveyors of pastel de Tentúgal.Learn more at the link in our bio about the pastry’s history and how it’s made. Visuals by @samyoukilis
