Paleoctober Day 6: Teratophoneus

Happy #FossilFriday, take a look at the skull of Teratophoneus! This tyrannosaur made southern Utah its stomping grounds roughly 76 million years ago, and it may have used those massive teeth to prey upon hadrosaurs such as Gryposaurus and Parasaurolophus. (1/2)

Hey artists, share something!

Teratophoneus dozing, large predators tend to sleep a lot (lions do like 23 hours a day?!) yet I don't often see dinosaurs depicted while they sleep. It looks so cute!

An older couple of models, but I still like them - anatomical studies of Teratophoneus and megalania approximately to scale.

The new Teratophoneus skull is out! Say hi to BCT. Collected in 2002-3, I just finished assembling our restored 3d print of this weird animal. Judith River Formation, MT

Skull is 40 inches, or just over a meter in length.

Curatorial googly eye for scale

🦖 Teratophoneus curriei - “monstrous murderer”

🦖 Latenivenatrix mcmasterae - “hiding huntress”

🦖 Aratasaurus museunacionali - “fire born lizard”

🦕 Dreadnoughtus schrani - “fears nothing”

🦕 Vulcanodon karibaensis - “volcano tooth”

There’s more, but you should definitely check these babies out 🙂‍↕️

Happy #FossilFriday, these are the broken lower leg bones (fibulae) of the tyrannosaurs Teratophoneus and Lythronax! Partial healing has occurred in both specimens, indicating the animals lived with the breaks for a short time before dying. (1/2)

Labocania aguillonae -- a bust of a new tyrannosaurine from Mexico, affiliated with the likes of Teratophoneus and Lythronax!

Take a look at these Teratophoneus ribs with some pretty painful pathologies for Fossil Friday! Note the red arrows pointing to overgrown and broken areas; these indicate spots where this individual broke their ribs or otherwise severely injured them. (1/3)

#Tatankacephalus was an armored dinosaur native to North America roughly 108mya. Its name comes from the Lakota name for Bison ("Tatanka") and the Greek "kephale" meaning head. This nodosaurid from Montana is known from a single partial skeleton.

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Dynamoterror dynastes

From Late Cretaceous Manefee Formation, New Mexico, "powerful terror ruler" is... the most overkill dinosaur name. Not known from much, it has already been called dubious. Though new unique features have been reported to keep it afloat

IMPORTANT CRASHPAD DINOSAUR UPDATE: New Idiot Dog approves of my reconstruction of Teratophoneus. Let us all have some lemonade ice cream pie in celebration.

Just over a year ago, we relocated the lost holotype locality of Teratophoneus curriei in the Kaiparowits Formation of Grand Staircase-Escalante NM. The impressions of the maxilla (pictured here) and dentary left behind in 1981 match perfectly with casts of the bones housed at BYU.

Starting Off Small

Gazing upon the skull of this land's apex predator, this young Parasaurolophus knows little of the dangers of its world and how lucky it must be to survive its first year.

Happy #FossilFriday from the new Teratophoneus specimen. The arm of this specimen, top, has massive reactive bone growth on the radius and ulna indicating a raging infection after the hand was forcibly removed in life.

How did it depart the rest of the tyrannosaur? No idea, but it surely hurt🧪🦖
