Haha yes it can be quite a cutting scent. I have some L'eau Trois from Diptyque that is super dry and terpenic on me so I wear it rarely, but I gave a decant to a guy friend and it smells heavenly on him.

Researchers tested 13 plant compounds against the main protease of SARS-CoV-2.

Most had weak effects but one showed moderate inhibition and two reduced lung inflammation in lab models while remaining safe to cells.

Perfumer Shawn Maher sniffed these flowers when they were blooming at the Garden in March 2025 and beautifully captured their lush silky floral with citrus and terpenic notes for #SmellingTheBouquet @mobotmuseum.bsky.social
You too can smell like witch hazel! Purchase it at the linktree in bio.

Citrus aurantium flower yields neroli oil by steam distillation, which has delicate tones marked by a sharp slightly terpenic top note that is pleasantly bitter, floral, fresh, citrusy, and herbal. The fruit rind is expressed, yielding oils that are classically citrus. Pix: @mobotgarden Herbarium

The Gushing Water Stone 20 (Olivier Durbano)

Stick through the aggressively terpenic opening… it gives way to the scent of warm, wet sands and a vibrant ecoastal forest.

Unique.

Characterising terpenic plant resins, wood tars and pitches in heritage science: analytical methods and applications
Plant-derived resins, tars, and pitches have been utilised since prehistory across diverse cultural and geographic contexts; this review focuses primarily on materials documented in European and Mediterranean archaeological and historical records1. These substances represent some of the earliest known technological innovations in human history, with a long and complex trajectory of use extending from the Palaeolithic period to the modern industrial era2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Birch tar, derived from Betulaceae, is the oldest known adhesive, with archaeological evidence from the European Lower Palaeolithic indicating its use approximately 200,000 years ago8, and it may also have served as an insect repellent9. In the Scandinavian Iron Age, birch bark tar was employed as sealant for wooden containers10. While the exploitation of birch bark tar for hafting tools is ancient, the transition to resin and pitch or tar from Pinaceae trees marked a significant technological shift. The production of wood tar, derived from resinous and non-resinous woody materials, was practiced by the Minoans around 3000 B.C.11, and likely served as an essential commodity for ancient centres of power in Greece, Macedonia, Asia Minor and Egypt12. In ancient Egypt, plant resins were integral to embalming practices13,14, and extensive records on the practical and ritual use of tar...

represents a move in olfactory perceptual space from the upper periphery (the citrus and terpenic poles) toward centre (the sweet vanillin pole) and the lower pyrogenic zone (the acetylpyrazine pole).

Perceptually, coumarin is located near the centre of olfactory space, adjacent to vanillin and cinnamaldehyde. So this shift in the #scentscape from the lighter, brighter, fresher terpenic aromas (e.g. pine, linalool, bergamot) to the sweeter, heavier coumarin and the pyrogenic isobutyl quinoline,

The whole length of the trail is dotted with the fresh creamy floral scent of phenylethanol, linalool, and nonanal. Towards west end of the lagoon the air becomes more woody and terpenic with mild flavors of vetiveryl acetate and pinene.

The greens have an unusual terpenic influence today, adding a piney, almost mint-like, accent of pinene and caryophylene

The path is dotted with a strong floral accord of rosy phenylethanol and creamy melon nonanal, becoming more citrus toward the north end with a fresh bergamot linalool.

Following the trail NW under the trees, the air becomes cooler and more terpenic with a soft woody fragrance of vetiveryl acetate and faint highlights of terpinyl acetate and citrus linalool.

Something underrated about raw carrots is their terpenic, woody-resinous, almost incense-adjacent aromatic quality

fūm - Kodama (Miss Layla, 202?). This Japanese inspired hinoki & moss combo is terpenic, but still smooth. It has a citrusy (yuzu) sharpness & a touch of spice (shiso) as well. Well balanced, light, calm, & meditative. A less abrasive GdG Hinoki #sotd #perfumesky
