Dogs of the Bronze Age: Companions in the Terramare! 🐾 Between 3,000 / 4,000 years ago, in the Po Valley—especially in the Terramare settlements—our ancestors lived in fortified villages surrounded by ditches and embankments. Dogs were everywhere in these communities, built on farming and livestock.

In summary, the transition from the Terramare-Appenine period into written history is best explained by continuity and cultural exchange, rather than grand migrations(save for Terramare migration into Etruria) which displace the local cultures and languages.

Strobel identified the Canis Spalletti (“Terramare Spitz”), likely a spitz-type dog similar to the Japanese Jomon dog. He also described the Canis palustris (“Terramare Hound”), a dolichomorphic and dolichocephalic dog—perhaps a greyhound or a Cretan hound, but not a modern pointer. #dogs #history

The Terramare culture of the Po river valley was directly in between Etruria to the south and the southern Alps to the north. When the Terramare system collapsed in the 1100s BCE, some fled north and developed into the Raeti, while many others fled south and developed into the Villanovan culture.

The presence of smaller dogs and different types suggests that the Terramare people had already begun selective breeding—maybe for companionship or pest control, given the importance of grain storage. #pets #puppy #archaeology #art

Like what was mainland Italy up to at the time? Terramare living on freaking stilts in a swamp? Pu-lease

That Etruria did not speak Italic languages is explained easily by refugees from the Terramare collapse becoming culturally dominant. I don't currently know where the the Lapygi of Puglia came from. Otherwise, there is near perfect regional alignment between Appenine and Italic speaking culture.

I think it most likely that the Appenine culture spoke Proto-Italic and the Terramare culture spoke Proto-Tyrsenic. This contrasts with seemingly popular theories that the Italic languages came to Italy later during the Urnfield period.

The Proto-Villanovan period likely saw a mixing of Terramare and Appenine related culture, sharing religious cultural ideas. The wider Urnfield tradition held influence over the Proto-Villanovans, but aside from funerary traditions did not replace local cultures.

There’s an Italy we rarely talk about. Made of wooden villages, stilt houses… and dogs. Yes, dogs. Small, agile, loyal. In the Bronze Age Terramare, 3,500 years ago, four-legged companions lived beside humans—more like us than we think. 🐾 #dogs #AncientHistory #italy #bronzeage

In Bronze Age Italy, Terramare villages had diverse #dogs (spitz, hounds, mastiffs, sighthounds). Pellegrino Strobel studied them in 1880, anticipating modern science. I tell their story in ROMA CANES MUNDI. If ancient #dogs fascinate you, read it. #zooarchaeology #history #bronzeage

I will start with the Terramare culture, as the reasoning is a bit easier to explain. There are three known Tyrsenic languages; Etruscan spoken in Etruria, Raetic spoken in the southern Alps and Lemnian attested in only two inscriptions on Lemnos.

Bronze Age villages in our part of Italy survived as mounds of "terramare" or "black earth" (name given to the culture, actually), which then got mined as manure so very few of them survived to be excavated.
