#Tesserae
Honouring all the young tesserae that didn’t grow up to be a mosaic.

A reused amphora housing thousands of loose white tesserae in the House of the Thiasus, #Pompeii.

#MosaicMonday: colourful #Roman glass tesserae found in Geneva/Switzerland, dating 3rd/4th c. AD.

Mosaic cubes were made of stone, pottery, tile, or glass. Glass tesserae were rather fragile. They were used rather rarely in floor mosaics to provide colours that...🧵1/2

Spectacular googly-eyed octopus does battle with a lobster in this 2,000 year-old Roman mosaic from Pompeii! 🐙 🦞

Fantastic fishy onlookers too! 👀

Detail of an opus signinum (pink tile and mortar) #Roman floor with black and white tesserae roundels and crosslets

Simple but effective 😍

From a 2nd century AD townhouse at Watling Court #London dug in 1978 and in the collection of London Museum (opening later this year 🤞)

For #InternationalDogDay 🐶, this incredible mosaic floor from Alexandria depicting a dog seated next to a gilded vessel. This Ptolemaic mosaic was made using the opus vermiculatum technique (small, closely set tesserae).

For #ReliefWednesday a #Roman relief from Ostia depicting a tesserae workshop: two men are cutting stones to prepare tesserae (little cubes) for mosaics. Two other men are bringing stone slabs to be cut, while a fifth man is telling where to put the slabs. 1/2

These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺

CUPCAKE #TWANG!🧁

We can definitively confirm that cupkakes are more Twangable than cuddly googly-eyed tesserae. 👨‍🔬

In the basket on the right already cut tesserae can be seen. Tesserae were not only made of stone, but also of other materials such as glass or pottery.

You seemed to like the Paphos mosaics yesterday, so here’s another pic! Look at the shadows these two have, all picked out in tiny tesserae. Wonderful 🐕

Abbondanza! This large mosaic emblema uses a limited palette of stone tesserae to depict baskets of fish and fruit, symbols of abundance from the sea and land. It probably once decorated the floor of a Roman villa's triclinium (dining room). 🏺

One has to see with their own eyes to understand fully how crazy the color grades in Roman mosaics' tesserae are🏺
