There isn't a single goddamn bit of substantiation of claims in this "paper." They just say the system is doing things, and then go on treating it as if it actually does. A mind with intent is assumed in every single selected "task" and evaluation of said task.
Models sometimes take covert actions. In our test, models are placed in situations involving conflicting objectives or perceived consequences, where covert actions are useful for achieving goals. The testenvironments cover explicit goals we give models in the prompt, goals that models infer from context, and goals that models acquired from training. In line with prior work (Scheurer et al., 2023; Meinke et al., 2024; Ren et al., 2025; Chiu et al., 2025), we find that frontier models including Gemini-2.5-pro, Claude Opus-4, Grok-4 and Llama 4 Maverick as well as OpenAI o3 and o4-mini, exhibit covert behaviors in our test environments (see examples in Figure 2 (left) and Appendix I). These behaviors include providing false information to users, withholding or misrepresenting relevant information, underperforming on benchmarks when told that high performance would lead to unlearning, and circumventing task
