It's Basil Rathbone's Day today & TCM has an interesting sort of 24 hrs of programming for him. Born in Johannesburg in South Africa, Rathbone was one of those Brits whose career in film was made more in Hollywood than in Britain.

Like countryman and fellow London Scottish Highlander Regiment soldier Ronald Colman, Rathbone could be called on to play the quintessential Brit in contemporary and period pieces.

Rathbone also was the master of the Evil Brit, leading to many of what I call his "Bastard" Rathbone roles, esp in period dramas. Captain Blood also showcasing a talent he had for fencing/swordfighting.

We get The Dawn Patrol, another of those rare roles where he's NOT a true villain nor a detective. And Tower of London is a rec as it leads into Rathbone's Horror Villain era and incl horror icon Boris Karloff.

His Sherlock Holmes period is well represented w/two of the films usually considered amongst the best for the other World's Greatest Detective (besides Batman, of course)-Woman In Green and Dressed To Kill.

Of course he acquits himself well in the Adventures of Robin Hood and is a standout, but it's very much Errol Flynn's film for he is the titular Robin Hood, so it doesn't get a huge recommendation from me.

The Bishop Murder Case (1930) is Rathbone as Philo Vance, another detective and is interesting b/c it isn't often that "baby" Rathbone is seen on TCM. (Baby is in quotes b/c Rathbone was almost 40.)
