Thirty-plus years, a handful of gigs, a stack of 4-track cassettes and 7"s scattered across compilations — and only now, with 'When You Smiled And Turned Away', do The Cat's Miaow get around to a debut studio album. It's a delightfully absurd piece of timing for a band this good, and also entirely fitting: proof, if any more were needed, that creativity does not have a use-by date. The title track, out now, does what The Cat's Miaow have always done best: it takes something small — the first spark of noticing someone, the moment before anything is said — and holds it up to the light without over-explaining it.
