Lifeguard Tower 12 Huntington Beach, California All along Huntington Beach, just south of Los Angeles, these alien-like pods stretch along the water’s edge for what seems like miles. I was being driven around — the conversation in the car was great — but I couldn’t take my eyes off them. With subjects like this, resistance eventually proves futile. I had to ask the driver to stop. It was January. The sun was piercing a petrol blue sky, the sand was scorching, and I knew before I even opened the door: this was going to be a contre-jour shot. Straight into the light. I needed the glare, needed the burn. I needed something solid to silhouette against that blinding reflection on the water. I ran toward Tower 12 and dropped to my knees — almost like a Hindu kneeling before a temple icon. No prayer, just stillness. I waited for the lone figure walking the beach to hit my personal spiritual spot: the luscious end of the compositional golden spiral. Click. And then — just as I checked the frame — the flare revealed itself. That perfect, internal sunburst across the lens. I hadn’t planned it. But there it was, like a cherry on top. A little grace note at the end of a hot pursuit.
